'TVK Wants To Give Support To Congress': Actor Vijay's Father Hints At Big Political Move
Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay's father, SA Chandrashekar, has hinted at a major political development in Tamil Nadu by saying that the TVK is considering extending support to the Congress in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters, Vijay's father hinted at a possible alliance between the TVK and Congress. “Congress has a history and a legacy… Congress fought for independence and is a party that is now declining," he said.
“They have been giving support to other parties and are declining day by day, and Vijay is ready to give them support and get them back to their old glory. It is up to Congress to take this opportunity," Chandrashekar further said.
However, Vijay's father also mentioned that several people had advised the actor to contest the upcoming elections alone. “People have been urging Vijay to contest on his own, assuring him of victory if he chooses to stand independently," he said. Emphasising that Vijay is fearless, Chandrasekhar said that the TVK leader has a bright chance of electoral success.
Noting that Dravidian parties have ruled Tamil Nadu for over 60 years, Chandrashekar said anyone who enters politics with the intention of doing good for society and ensuring true freedom will inevitably face challenges.
Last year, the TVK made it clear that it will not form an alliance with either the ruling DMK or BJP for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections next year. Senior TVK leader Arun Raj, said the party, however, will ally with anyone who accepts Vijay as the chief ministerial candidate. Raj called the DMK its “political enemy" while the BJP is its “ideological enemy".
Recently, the actor-turned-politician, during a meeting in Tamil Nadu's Mahabalipuram, ripped into DMK, calling it an “evil force". He also criticised the DMK for allegedly forgetting its founder, CN Annadurai, and the party's foundational principles. “Anna has been forgotten by the party he founded and the party that bears his name," he said.
The party's poll manifesto for the upcoming Assembly polls would be built on the pillar of social justice, and the roadmap would focus on transforming Tamil Nadu through inclusive growth and a vision for all sectors.
Vijay has been embroiled in controversy, already facing questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the Karur stampede that killed 41 people in September. His movie ‘Jana Nayagan' is also facing problems at the censor board due to unresolved certification issues.
The censor board has marked some dialogues and visual sequences as problematic for potential offence to religious people.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami launched a sharp attack on actor Vijay, stating that crowds naturally gather around film stars but that popularity does not translate into political leadership.
Acknowledging Vijay's success as an actor, EPS said the AIADMK remained a proven political force.
Referring to the recent tragedy in which 41 people lost their lives, Palaniswami alleged that they had gathered to see Vijay and criticised him for not visiting or consoling the victims' families.
He also categorically ruled out the possibility of former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam being re-inducted into the AIADMK.
