US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 200 per cent tariffs on French wine and champagne after France indicated that it would decline his invitation to join a proposed “Board of Peace".
The body was initially envisioned to oversee the reconstruction of war-ravaged Gaza, though its charter does not appear to restrict its scope to the occupied Palestinian territory alone.
“I'll put a 200 per cent tariff on his wines and champagnes. And he'll join. But he doesn't have to join," Trump said, referring to French President Emmanuel Macron.

A source close to Macron told AFP that France “does not intend to answer favourably" to the invitation. The source added that the board's charter “goes beyond the sole framework of Gaza", indicating Paris' reservations about the proposed body.
Trump also confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been invited to join the Board of Peace, following earlier reports from Moscow.

France has signalled it is unlikely to accept US President Donald Trump's invitation to join his proposed “Board of Peace", citing concerns that the initiative goes beyond the framework of Gaza and could undermine established international structures, a source close to President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday.
The board was initially conceived as a mechanism to oversee the reconstruction of war-ravaged Gaza. However, French officials believe its scope is broader and insufficiently defined. The source said the charter “goes beyond the sole framework of Gaza" and raises serious questions, particularly around respect for the principles and structure of the United Nations.
France, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has stressed that the UN's role in maintaining international peace and security cannot be bypassed. The source close to Macron said the proposal raises issues that “under no circumstances can be called into question", especially those linked to the UN system.
