Donald Trump’s 50 per cent tariffs on India to end soon? 3 US Lawmakers take MAJOR decision, introduce…
The relations between New Delhi and Washington witnessed a major downturn after Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50 per cent in August.
The relationship between India and the United States has long been considered one of the most important relationships in terms of global strategic and economic cooperation. The current period marks the beginning of a new phase of greater challenges to the established partnership, as the recent actions taken by the U.S. government have raised concerns in India. Increased visa fees for Indian students, professionals, and tourists, along with the newly imposed high tariffs on India's exports to the U.S., have created an environment of increased stress on a previously well-developed partnership on multiple levels. While India and the U.S. are still actively working together in the areas of defense, technology, and geopolitics, the growing economic tension between them is beginning to lead to questions about the future of the bilateral relationship.
Amid escalating tensions over tariffs, visa fees, and political grievances, a resolution was put forward on Friday by three members of the US House of Representatives to end President Trump's national emergency declaration. This emergency declaration implemented tariffs of up to 50% on imports from India. The three Representatives view these tariffs as an illegal measure and harmful to American workers, consumers, and bilateral ties.
The resolution, spearheaded by House members Deborah Ross, Marc Veasey, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, is a continuation of a previous Senate agreement that sought to remove the equivalent tariff in Brazil and limit the President's use of emergency powers to raise import duties.
As per the release, the resolution seeks to rescind the additional 25 per cent “secondary” duties imposed on India on August 27, 2025, on top of earlier reciprocal tariffs, which together raised duties on many Indian-origin products to 50 per cent under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), as reported by the news agency ANI.
“North Carolina's economy is deeply connected to India through trade, investment, and a vibrant Indian American community,” said Congresswoman Ross, highlighting that Indian companies have invested over a billion dollars in the state, creating thousands of jobs in sectors such as life sciences and technology, while North Carolina manufacturers export hundreds of millions of dollars in goods to India annually.
“India is an important cultural, economic, and strategic partner, and these illegal tariffs are a tax on everyday North Texans who are already struggling with rising costs,” Congressman Veasey was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
On the other hand, Indian-American Congressman Krishnamoorti has pointed out the negative effects of the tariffs placed on imports from India, stating that the tariffs were “counterproductive, disrupt supply chains, harm American workers, and drive up costs for consumers,” stressing that ending them would help strengthen US-India economic and security cooperation.
“Instead of advancing American interests or security, these duties disrupt supply chains, harm American workers, and drive up costs for consumers. Ending these damaging tariffs will allow the United States to engage with India to advance our shared economic and security needs,” Krishnamoorthi mentioned, ANI reported.
US President Donald Trump has increased tariffs on Indian imports to a staggering 50 percent, including a 25 percent additional duties for India's purchases of Russian crude oil, which commenced from August 27.
Democratic lawmakers in Congress are attempting to redefine the economic relationship between the United States and India while opposing the unilateral trade actions taken by President Donald Trump.
Earlier in October, Ross, Veasey, and Krishnamoorthi, along with Congressman Ro Khanna and 19 other Democratic Members of Congress, urged President Trump to reverse his tariff policies against India and to restore strained bilateral relations. The release stated, “Ending Trump's India tariffs is part of a broader effort by congressional Democrats to reclaim Congress' constitutional authority over trade and to stop the President from using emergency powers to unilaterally impose his misguided trade policies.”
Former US President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods, claiming that India's continued purchase of discounted Russian oil and trade ties with Moscow were indirectly fueling Russia's war efforts in Ukraine.
The relations between New Delhi and Washington witnessed a major downturn after Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50 per cent in August including a 25 per cent additional duties for India's purchase of Russian crude oil. The strain in the relations has been exacerbated by constant criticism of New Delhi by officials in Trump's administration. There have been efforts by both sides In the last few weeks to repair the ties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on Thursday discussed ways to sustain momentum in the bilateral economic partnership in a phone conversation.
