Trump 'cognitive decline and dementia' searches blocked? Google AI overview under fire for biased filtering
Google is facing serious accusations about its alleged AI response to information on President Donald Trump's mental health. Google appears to have blocked certain artificial intelligence search results for queries about President Donald Trump's mental acuity. But Google does provide an AI summary about former President Joe Biden, who was criticized for his mental acuity during the 2024 presidential run.
Tech giant Google has been accused of hiding Artificial Intelligence search results when users seek information about whether 79-year-old Donald Trump has dementia. According to The Verge, when one types the prompt "does Trump shows sign of dementia" into Google's search bar, it brings up a list of websites which displays the message, "An AI Overview is not available for this search".
Google appeared to have blocked certain AI search results for queries about Trump's mental acuity, but will provide an AI summary of the same for former President Joe Biden. When The Economic Times input the same search, the message no longer appeared. Inputting exactly the same query, but for Biden, Google's AI Overview responds with a summary. Joe Biden also faced questions about his mental acuity during his time in office.
When switched to AI mode, Google does not provide a generated summary of information. Instead, it displays the same top web page results for the query. There is also no AI summary if you search for whether Trump shows signs of Alzheimer's.

Trump has dementia?
“Assessing whether Joe Biden shows signs of dementia is a complex question with various perspectives and differing conclusions,” Google's AI mode states. It also lists examples of why Biden may be experiencing cognitive decline or apparent signs of dementia.When you type “does Biden show signs of alzheimer's” into AI mode, the response also says the answer is a “complex question with no definitive answer,” and that it “remains elusive without a formal medical diagnosis.”
When contacted for comment, a Google spokesperson told The Independent its AI Overviews and AI Mode “won't show a response to every query.”

Google on AI overview searches blocked
"Our systems automatically determine where an AI response will be useful, and it's not always 100 percent consistent,” the spokesperson said. “We don't show AI Overviews on every query and similarly in AI Mode, for some topics (like current events) we may show a list of links as the response.”The change in AI search mode regarding Trump's mental health comes after Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, met President Trump at the White House in September. During the meeting, he thanked Trump for his leadership and praised his administration for its “AI Action Plan,” launched in July.
“The AI moment is one of the most transformative moments any of us have ever seen or will see in our lifetimes, so making sure the U.S. is at the forefront — and I think your administration is investing a lot,” Pichai said at the dinner on September 4. “Already the AI action plan under your leadership I think is a great start, and we look forward to working together. According to The Verge, Google could be “concerned about the president's reaction” to questions regarding his alleged cognitive decline. Meanwhile, YouTube, a Google-owned platform, agreed this week to pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by Trump after his account was suspended following the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
Trump has dismissed scrutiny about his mental acuity for years, maintaining he is a “stable genius” and boasting about acing simple cognitive tests. In June he alleged that Biden had “suffered from serious cognitive decline” for years.
Trump, who is set to surpass Biden as the oldest sitting president in U.S. history, has not faced the same level of public scrutiny regarding his cognitive abilities, despite numerous concerning signs.
The President has dismissed any suggestion that he is in mental decline and frequently boasts about passing the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a test used to detect cognitive impairment or early signs of dementia. The test involves tasks such as drawing a clock to show a specific time and identifying animals.
