Beneath the waves lies a world as mysterious as any distant planet: the vast, uncharted depths of our oceans. Much of this underwater realm remains beyond human reach, holding secrets that continue to intrigue scientists.
In a recent deep-sea expedition, researchers sent a remote-controlled camera nearly 4 kilometres into the South Atlantic Ocean. What they captured left the scientific community and the world astonished.
While exploring a massive underwater canyon, the camera recorded a strange, pink-coloured creature gliding gracefully through the dark waters. It had ear-shaped fins that flapped gently as it swam, immediately reminding scientists of Disney's beloved character ‘Dumbo'. This remarkable sighting took place in the Mar del Plata submarine canyon, located about 193 miles off Argentina's east coast.
The mysterious creature was identified as a Grimpoteuthis, more commonly known as the Dumbo octopus. There are 17 known species of this deep-sea animal, each recognised for the distinctive fins positioned above their eyes.
Dumbo octopuses are the deepest-living of all octopus species, thriving under crushing water pressure and in freezing temperatures. They move by flapping their soft, jelly-like bodies and ear-shaped fins, giving them an almost alien appearance.

According to scientists, this is the first recorded sighting of a Dumbo octopus in Argentine waters. John Ablett, Senior Curator at London's Natural History Museum, explained that these octopuses are unlike any other. “They are incredibly soft and jelly-like, which makes them look otherworldly," he said. Typically, they grow between 20 and 30 centimetres in length, but the largest on record reached an astonishing 1.8 metres and weighed 5.9 kilograms.
The same expedition also documented another fascinating find: a so-called ‘devil' starfish, bearing a striking resemblance to Patrick Star from the cartoon ‘SpongeBob SquarePants'.

Such discoveries highlight just how much remains hidden in the deep oceans, waiting to be explored. Notably, a Dumbo octopus was also spotted in 2020 at an incredible depth of 7,000 metres in the Indian Ocean.
These rare glimpses into deep-sea life highlight that Earth's oceans hold countless mysteries, with each exploration having the potential to reveal something extraordinary.
