The Moment of Truth: India and New Zealand’s contrasting cricketing identities collide in the T20 World Cup final

Despite contrasting perceptions, India and New Zealand's T20 teams share a common pursuit of success through strong team culture. India leverages vast resources, while New Zealand thrives on unity and care despite scarcity. Both captains emphasize player freedom and understanding individual needs to foster a winning environment.
Suryakumar Yadav’s India is a team full of T20 rockstars brought up in the cauldron of the IPL. They are the richest players in the world, sport tattoos before scoring international hundreds, wear watches that cost more than most professionals will earn in a lifetime and have every whim and fancy of theirs indulged by the richest cricket board. This is the perception, and nothing any of them does as individuals will change that.
Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand are a bunch of nice guys who punch above their weight in global tournaments. For the best part, they live in the shadow of the All Blacks, rugby being the dominant sport in a country with several times as many sheep as people. They’re country boys who love their farms, and yeah, it’s no wonder that their blessed land was chosen as the setting for the Shire inhabited by Hobbits that even their worst enemies cannot hate. This is the perception, and nothing any of them does as individuals will change that. But perception and reality are not always the most compatible bedfellows. The fact is that India have reached the final of four ICC competitions in the last two and a half years. This, of course, is a reflection of the wealth of India’s cricketing talent, the infrastructure and might of the BCCI.
The truth is that New Zealand have reached the final of five ICC events in the last seven years. This is regularly put down to them punching above their weight, but, when they do so with such regularity, should it even be seen as an anomaly, even given the fact that their results in bilateral series do not come close?
India are winners because of all the resources they have, and New Zealand succeed despite scarcity. There is no way to explain this without understanding that the identity of each of these teams lies in being the best they can be. That New Zealand, despite always stretching the best, has not actually won silverware is more intriguing.“I wouldn’t mind winning a trophy,” said Santner, deadpan. “You look at this group and the groups that have been in the past, we are pretty consistent because we try not to get overawed by the situation or opponents, we just go out there and do our thing as a unit. But yeah, I wouldn’t mind breaking a few hearts to lift the trophy for once.” Santner was speaking at the Narendra Modi Stadium on the eve of a massive occasion.
Surya followed. “I feel that having the right team culture, a good atmosphere in the dressing-room is very important,” said Surya. “If you want to see players happy on the ground, what you do off the field is really important. You have to give them freedom of speech in the dressing-room and listen to their ideas. You have to find out what they feel and understand what each of them wants. Being captain or leader is just a position: what you have to do is go down to all the players and understand how they want this side to run.”
Gary Stead, New Zealand’s coach, shed light on their story. “We know we can’t compete with the population and resources that others have. What we do through our culture is try and show a lot of care to people,” Stead told EspnCricinfo. “There is a genuine caring for people, whether they were playing in the squad or were on the sidelines. All players on the sidelines are equally important to getting results, through helping players get ready, through their running the drinks, and through all those little things that might ultimately make a big difference.”
“I was playing in the 2000s, and things were a lot more cutthroat and selfish. There has been a shift in the positive direction,” explained Stead. “People at the Black Caps level have understood what our identity is about. The media can be pretty brutal on players without truly understanding the value of that player. While they see the runs and wickets, the part they play within the team environment and the things they add away from the ground all make up what your team actually is.”
Surya explained that he had learned on the job, as captain, what was expected of him. “These players don’t want a captain to become a father figure or an elder brother to tell them what to do,” he said. “They need to be given the freedom to be themselves. At times, you need to have a word, but you have to just let them be.”
From the outside, India and New Zealand could not be more different as two sets of people. In their pursuit of setting up a culture that works and allowing the results to follow, they are united.
