The Gravity-Defying ‘Steepest Cable Railway’ Moves On A Vertical Track, ‘Beautiful But Terrifying’ Video Is From…
Known for its great landscapes and stunning tourist destinations, Switzerland has also gone leaps and bounds in technological development over the years. In winter, the country's densely snowy mountain terrains are home to the gravity-defying cable railway line of Stoosbahn, which remains one of the biggest engineering marvels on the globe.
A video shared by NatGeo Science on Instagram perfectly captured the Stoosbahn in all its glory and unique presence as the steepest cable railway in the world. The train operates ever so smoothly despite running on a track built on aggravated slopes and dangerous curves through the mountain village of Stoos, which is usually covered in white snow during the winter season.
Stoosbahn – An Engineering Marvel
Launched in 2017, Stoosbahn is a funicular cable railway line that connects the Swiss villages of Schwyz to Stoos. Operating at an altitude of 744 meters above the turf, the train has spherical cabins that adapt perfectly to all the slopes. Functioning at an excellent speed, Stoosbahn takes people to Stoos from Schwyz within 4 to 7 minutes after crossing two bridges and three tunnels.
The Stoosbahn train was designed by engineers to hold and keep passengers safe even at near-vertical angles of the tracks in the Stoos hills. The train's sphere carriages are connected to a pair of hydraulic cylinders that rotate them in sync with each other. It ensures that the passengers stay level, irrespective of whether the track is flat or steep. Stoosbahn covers the 1,740 metres distance, giving travellers memorable glimpses of the Alpine landscape of Central Switzerland.
‘Got To Love The Swiss Engineering'
As NatGeo Science introduced Switzerland's Stoosbahn train to the Indian social media users, people acknowledged and admired the country's engineering gem for its unbelievable ways and advanced technology.
“Got to love the Swiss engineering," mentioned a user.
Someone else said, “Anything Switzerland does is always luxurious. Look at that train, it is exquisitely beautiful."
“At least it's on a track, so if things go south, it becomes the best roller coaster of your life," quipped an individual after watching the slanted track.
The Stoosbahn takes people to the natural paradise of the holiday village of Stoos, which attracts tourists from all over the world for its soulful sights, panoramic hikes and winter sports adventures.
