The First 6 Weeks: What Every New Mother Should Expect
The first six weeks after having a baby are often called the “fourth trimester," and the name fits. Everything shifts, your routine, your body, your emotions and even your sense of identity. It's a tender, messy, beautiful stretch of time where you're recovering physically and adjusting to life with a newborn. While everyone's journey looks a little different, there are some common experiences many new mothers share. Dr. Aruna Kalra, Senior Gynaecologist, Robotic Surgeon & Obstetrician at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, shares her insights:
Healing After Birth
Your body has done something extraordinary, and now it needs time to recover. If you had a vaginal birth, expect some soreness, stitches if you tore and postpartum bleeding that may last a few weeks. If you had a C-section, you'll likely deal with incision tenderness and restricted movement as your body heals from surgery.
Hormones will fluctuate as well. You may notice night sweats, breast engorgement, hair shedding or swelling. Uterine cramping especially while breastfeeding is normal and occurs as your uterus shrinks back down. It can feel strange or uncomfortable, but it's a sign your body is healing.
Feeding: A Learning Experience
Whether you choose to breastfeed, pump or formula-feed, feeding your baby can take time to figure out. Breastfeeding in particular can feel surprisingly challenging at first. Soreness, latch frustrations and cluster feeding are all common. Many mothers find support from lactation consultants, online resources or breastfeeding groups helpful.
Formula-feeding also has its own learning curve, you may experiment with bottles or brands to find what works best. No matter how you feed, remember: fed is best, and confidence comes with practice.
Sleep: A New Rhythm
Newborns sleep a lot, but rarely in long stretches. They'll likely wake every couple of hours to feed, which means broken sleep becomes part of your life for a while. This can feel draining, especially when you're already healing physically.
If you're able, rest when your baby sleeps, even if it's just for 20 minutes. Let go of non-urgent tasks. Accept help. Slowly, as your baby grows, sleep stretches lengthen and routines start to form.
Emotional Ups and Downs
Your emotions may surprise you. One moment you might feel overwhelmed with love, and the next you may cry from exhaustion or worry. Many new mothers experience the “baby blues" during the first week or two. It's temporary and usually tied to hormonal shifts, lack of sleep and the weight of new responsibility.
If sadness, anxiety or feelings of detachment continue beyond that window or if they make daily functioning difficult, it may be postpartum depression or anxiety. These are common and treatable. Talking to a healthcare provider or a support system can make a huge difference.
Bonding Takes Time
Some mothers feel a deep connection with their baby right away. Others develop that bond more slowly. Both experiences are normal. Bonding often happens during the simplest moments, feeding, rocking, watching their expressions or holding them close.
Try not to compare your journey with anyone else's. Love grows in its own time.
Accepting Help and Slowing Down
This period is about recovery and adjustment not perfection. If someone offers to fold laundry, cook a meal or hold the baby while you shower, say yes. You don't need to do everything yourself.
A New Chapter Begins
The first six weeks can feel long and short at the same time. There will be moments of uncertainty and moments of pure joy. Over time, you'll find your rhythm, your confidence and a new version of yourself.
Be patient with your body, gentle with your emotions and proud of the work you're doing, because it is work, and you're doing it beautifully.
