Tesla Shifts Gears In India, Puts Ex-Lamborghini Boss Sharad Agarwal In Driver’s Seat
Tesla Inc has signalled a major strategic shift in its approach to the challenging Indian market by appointing Sharad Agarwal, the former head of Lamborghini India, as its new country head. Agarwal, who began his role this week, is tasked with steering Tesla's operations and sales strategy in the world's most populous nation, marking a departure from the company's previous remote management structure.
Agarwal's appointment is viewed as a crucial step towards developing a more homegrown strategy in India. Prior to this, Tesla relied on a smaller local team managed remotely by executives in China and other regional hubs. By bringing in a seasoned automotive leader with deep local market knowledge, Tesla is looking to establish a strong, on-the-ground leadership presence.
Agarwal's background indicates that Tesla will initially double down on India's luxury buyer segment. During his nearly decade-long tenure leading Lamborghini India, he played a pivotal role in making India one of the brand's top global markets. He is credited with expanding the super-luxury brand's footprint beyond major metropolitan areas to over 60 cities, proving his expertise in catering to the high-end consumer.
This focus is pragmatic, given the severe pricing constraints in the Indian market. Tesla's initial offerings, such as the Model Y, start at over Rs 60 lakh due to steep import tariffs. This price point is significantly higher than the Rs 22 lakh range where the majority of electric vehicle (EV) sales in India occur.
Agarwal's immediate responsibility will be to address the challenges that have contributed to Tesla's sluggish start. Since launching sales in mid-July, the company has reportedly received just over 800 orders—a volume that pales in comparison to its global delivery rate.
His challenge is two-fold: converting early curiosity into meaningful sales and navigating India's complex regulatory environment, which includes high import duties and a relatively slow pace of national EV adoption (EVs account for just over 5% of total car sales).
While the company has intensified marketing efforts, including setting up pop-up experience centres in major malls, the appointment of an on-site, experienced luxury leader like Agarwal underscores Tesla's commitment to forging a more impactful and localised strategy to secure its long-term ambitions in India's electric mobility revolution.
