Son Ye-jin’s Classic Hit Spellbound To Become K Drama With Park Eun-bin And Yang Se-jong
The 2011 hit film Spellbound, starring Son Ye-jin and Lee Min-ki, became a fan favourite for its unique blend of horror and romance. Now, the story is returning, this time as a K drama, titled Chilling Romance, with Park Eun-bin and Yang Se-jong in the lead roles. The remake, scheduled to release in 2026, will follow a hotel heiress who has the ability to see ghosts and a skilled detective who can always solve cases. Together, they team up to solve mysteries.
In this new version, Park Eun-bin will play Chun Yeo-ri, the heiress with a supernatural gift, while Yang Se-jong will return to television as the sharp minded detective Ma Kang-wook. Fans of the original movie, as well as new viewers, are eagerly waiting for the remake's release.
As per Sports.Donga, the production team said, “Chilling Romance is a horror romance about a woman who sees ghosts but is not afraid and a man who encounters an unexpected world because of her. Cheon Yeo-ri's mysterious ability and Ma Kang-wook's forensic instinct will intertwine to provide a thrilling catharsis."
Interestingly, the upcoming K drama will be the fourth adaptation of Spellbound. Earlier, the film was remade in the Philippines, Vietnam and China, where each version became a major hit in its own country.
When Son Ye-jin Spoke About Spellbound
Ahead of Spellbound's release in 2011, Son Ye-jin, speaking about the film with Korea JoongAng Daily, said, “It's a romantic comedy with a bit of horror. I think the film should be classified as a hair-raising romantic comedy. I think the film is a well balanced mixture of romantic comedy and horror. It wasn't easy, of course. But I tried to find a happy medium between comedy and horror. To be honest, I wasn't sure about doing a romantic comedy before I appeared in The Art of Seduction because I've been doing a lot of melodramas. Back then, I wondered if the public would accept me in a comedic film.'
Revealing her chemistry with co-star Lee Min-ki, Son Ye-jin added, “We hadn't worked together before this, but we got along far better than I expected. He was flexible and quick to respond to any given situation. Above all, he is open-minded and good-hearted."
Other than Lee Min-ki and Son Ye-jin, Spellbound, directed by Hwang In-ho, also features Park Chul-min, Kim Hyun-sook, Lee Mi-do, Yoon Ji-min, Lee Hyun-jin and Hwang Seung-eon.
