An emotional chapter came to a close on Sunday evening as Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min bid farewell to the club in his homeland of South Korea.
The 33-year-old forward, who confirmed this weekend that he will leave Spurs after a decade of service, was visibly moved during his send-off at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
The pre-season friendly between Spurs and Newcastle United ended in a 1-1 draw, but the result was a footnote to the outpouring of love and gratitude for Son from teammates, opponents, and the 65,000 fans in attendance.

Son started the match and played 65 minutes in what may have been his final appearance for Tottenham. Although he didn't find the back of the net, his presence alone electrified the crowd, many of whom came draped in South Korean colors and Spurs kits bearing his name.
His teammates looked determined to give him a farewell goal—repeatedly feeding him the ball early in the match—but Son was caught offside twice and struggled to make a decisive impact. When he was substituted for Mohammed Kudus midway through the second half, he left the field in tears to a thunderous ovation, embracing teammates and even Newcastle players before taking his seat on the bench.
“An Unforgettable Day"
“I didn't think I was going to cry at first," Son admitted afterward. “But after hearing a few words from my teammates, leaving the club I've spent so much time with felt really tough."
“I felt really, really happy playing this match. Thanks to my fans, my teammates, and also my opponents, I've had an unforgettable day."
Son declined to confirm where he will play next season, although he has been strongly linked with Major League Soccer's Los Angeles FC. “Nothing has been finalised," he said.
A Goal and a Tribute
Tottenham's Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a well-placed right-footed strike—and celebrated with Son's trademark camera pose in tribute to the departing captain.
Newcastle equalised in the 38th minute through Harvey Barnes, whose shot bounced in off the post past goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

Son, who joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen, has become one of the most beloved players in the club's modern era, with over 350 appearances and 160+ goals to his name. He is also South Korea's all-time leading scorer and national team captain.
