Poor civic sense and people littering around were a big issue for the Indian Railways as it is, now the authorities are also holding their heads in frustration over people causing vandalism inside its trains. A video on the internet unveiled shocking scenes from an Indian Railways train as its seats were found ravaged by some sharp object, presumably a blade or a knife.
In what was suspected to be a case of intentional damage, one could see the seats of this coach receiving prolonged cuts. An account which originally shared the video on January 30 claimed it was recorded at the Bakhtiyarpur Junction on the Kamla Ganga Intercity Express.
Intentional Damage To A Busy Train
“Train seats slashed with blades. These are people who despise India's growing infrastructure, who find comfort not in progress but in destruction," wrote a person re-sharing the video in anger over the infrastructural damage caused to the Indian Railways train.
The Kamla Ganga Intercity Express, which travels daily between Patna and Darbhanga on Bihar's East Central Railway, is usually packed with people. The torn-up seats would've caused the travellers major inconvenience, as some bad elements slashed the blades across multiple seats in one of the coaches. Amidst increasing passenger count, the incident also raised the ongoing concerns regarding vandalism and traveller safety for the railway officials.
‘Must Equip The Trains With CCTV'
The destruction caused to the property indirectly funded by the precious money of India's taxpayers sparked widespread outrage. While some people called for stringent penalties on those found guilty of such horrible acts, others urged the authorities to immediately deploy CCTV cameras inside for safety.
“It is an absolute must to equip the trains with CCTV," suggested a person.
Someone else said, “Are there no cameras or other passengers who can stop the culprits?"
“Those who did it must be apprehended and put behind bars, plus the cost of repair or replacement must be recovered. Their photos must be displayed in railway stations as habitual offenders. They should be barred from travelling by train (just like in air travel) for their lifetime. CCTVs must be installed," commented another user.
According to reports, the vandalised coach had been declared out of service and an RPF investigation had been launched into the matter. While no suspects were immediately identified, the incident should raise alarm bells for the railway authorities and lead to some necessary steps.
