Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar to Meet Congress High Command Today – Three Ways This Could Go
Speculations are rife about the leadership change and cabinet reshuffle in Karnataka as the Congress government completed three years in office on May 20.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar are scheduled to meet the Congress high command on May 26. Apart from these two leaders, several ministers, considered close to the CM, like Satish Jarkiholi, G Parameshwara, H C Mahadevappa are also in the national capital. The meeting is being closely watched as it may offer clarity on the party’s internal dynamics and the way forward for the state government, which has been facing a leadership crisis for months.
Siddaramaiah on Monday said the Congress high command invited him to Delhi for a meeting. He, however, said he was unaware of the meeting’s agenda.
While Shivakumar initially said he would go to the national capital if called by the Congress high command, he later confirmed that he was going.
While Siddaramaiah favours a Cabinet reshuffle, Shivakumar wants the party to decide on the leadership change first, reported news agency PTI citing party sources.
1. Siddaramaiah To Complete Full Term
Siddaramaiah has repeatedly asserted that he will complete the full five years, and the first possibility is that he is asked by the party high command to continue in the top post. Under this scenario, a rejig may be allowed for stronger representation of different sections.
2. Shivakumar To Take Over As Karnataka CM
The supporters of DK Shivakumar have been insisting on his elevation in line with a reported power-sharing agreement with Siddaramaiah when the party won the 2023 Assembly elections. However, no such arrangement was made public.
A possibility may be that DK Shivakumar may be asked to take over as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, and Siddaramaiah may be moved to the Rajya Sabha, as elections are to be held on four Rajya Sabha seats in the state.
3. A Wild Card Entry
Amid the ongoing Congress tussle in Karnataka, speculation around Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge emerging as a compromise face has gained traction, given his stature as a senior Dalit leader with decades of experience. Kharge’s entry is possible if deadlock continues, multiple reports suggest. However, sources indicate that his entry remains unlikely, as any such move would require him to step down as Indian National Congress president—a transition the party is not keen on at this stage.
