Shocking Video Exposes Malana’s Caste Custom: ‘Outsiders Can’t Touch...’ — Is This Backward Or Sacred?

Shocking Video Exposes Malana’s Caste Custom: ‘Outsiders Can’t Touch...’ — Is This Backward Or Sacred?
An incident from Malana village in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu valley has drawn widespread attention after a woman documented her experience of interacting with locals under the village's strict social customs. The visuals show her placing money on the ground outside a shop which the shopkeeper later picks up. He then returns the change in the same manner.
The exchange, unusual to many viewers, became a talking point online. The woman, identified as Tushika Agarwal, later explained the incident through a detailed caption shared along with the video. She wrote, “I was not even allowed to enter the shop even."
Malana Works On ‘A Code Entirely Its Own'
In her caption, Tushika described Malana as a village that follows “a code entirely its own." According to her explanation, outsiders are not permitted to touch village temples, homes, or even the people themselves. Physical contact by non-locals is believed to disturb ritual purity, which is why interactions are deliberately kept distant.
She added that “money is never exchanged hand-to-hand," and instead placed on the ground or a surface for locals to pick up.
‘Only Malana People Touch Each Other'
As described in the caption, “only Malana villagers may touch one another or their sacred spaces."
“The community considers itself distinct from the rest of India and follows its own ancient legal system, governed by a traditional council rather than modern administrative structures," Tushika added.
She also mentioned that, according to local belief and oral tradition, the people of Malana trace their lineage to soldiers of Alexander the Great, a belief that strengthens their sense of cultural and ancestral uniqueness.
Summing up her experience, she wrote that “in a country defined by diversity, Malana remains one of the rare places where isolation is not accidental, but a deliberate preservation of identity, belief, and centuries-old tradition."

Internet Reacts Strongly To Malana ‘No-Touch' Rule
The video has since garnered over 20 million views across social media platforms and triggered intense discussion. Despite her explaining the village's customs and social code in her caption, it drew criticism from several users who described the practice as discriminatory and questioned its justification in the name of tradition.
One user commented, “Untouchability discrimination is also a discrimination that is not justified by saying traditional rituals."
Another said, “This is called cultural double standard. People from outside are not allowed to touch locals or enter inside the shops but the money touched by outsiders is picked up without hesitation."
“If you're truly that protective of your culture then be honest and ban tourists completely. Don't selectively preach purity while your shops are filled with packaged snacks and daily use items made by outsiders. If outsiders are such a problem, why sell their products? Why accept money that has passed through countless hands?" someone wrote.
“Of course, we celebrate untouchability in different forms in India in the name of tradition," a person remarked.
“I find it so funny how fast the money went off the ground considering how there are ‘supposed' rules to not touch outsiders or their stuff. Hilarious," an individual reacted.
“Would never go there, this is not respecting their belief, this is straight discrimination and insult to outsiders," read another comment.
What Is Malana's ‘No-Touch' Rule?
Malana's “no-touch" rule requires outsiders to avoid touching villagers, houses, walls, temples and certain objects. And if this rule is violated, a purification ritual or fine may be imposed. Locals often consider non-Malanis as ritually “impure."
The custom is closely tied to the village deity Jamlu and is described by residents as a way to preserve ritual purity, independence and community identity.
Why The Practice Is Called Untouchability
Many believe custom mirrors caste-based untouchability where certain groups are viewed as polluting and are denied access to spaces, people and physical interaction.
Reports linked to Malana have also pointed out that outsiders are often treated as “unclean" and “untouchable" that has drawn parallels to broader patterns of caste-based exclusion seen elsewhere in India.
Constitutional And Legal Perspective
Under Article 17 of the Indian Constitution, untouchability in any form is abolished. The Protection of Civil Rights Act also criminalises its practice and enforcement.
In other contexts, Indian courts have described caste-based exclusion as “regressive" and have called for its immediate end.

‘Not An Expression Of Hatred'
But supporters of Malana's customs frame the rule as a sacred tradition tied to the village's deity Jamlu. According to them, it is not an expression of hatred. They further argue that outsiders must respect local customs when visiting.
