Shafali Verma made history on Thursday during the second T20I between India women’s cricket team and Australia at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
The Indian opener became the third Indian batter to reach the 2500-run milestone after Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur with her 23-ball 29.
Earlier, Harmanpreet Kaur also made history as she became the most capped international player in women’s cricket. On February 19, in her 356th international match, Kaur surpassed New Zealand legend Suzie Bates to claim the record for the most-capped player in women’s international cricket.
Following Harmanpreet and Suzie Bates, Ellyse Perry, with 349 international matches for Australia, is third on the list of women cricketers with the most appearances. Former Indian cricketer Mithali Raj played in 333 matches, while Charlotte Edwards represented England in 309 games. Other notable names include Sophie Devine (305 matches, New Zealand), Heather Knight (303 matches, England), and Danni Wyatt-Hodge (302 matches, England).
Throughout her career, Harmanpreet has played in six Tests, 161 ODIs, and 189* T20Is. In these six Tests, she has scored 200 runs. The 36-year-old has accumulated 4,409 runs in ODIs and 3,784 runs in T20Is. Additionally, she has participated in 35 Women’s Premier League matches, 62 Women’s Big Bash League matches, and 10 Women’s 100 matches.
Harmanpreet Kaur also led India to their first-ever World Cup title in the 2025 edition, where they defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final.
Georgia Voll (88) and Beth Mooney (46) recorded Australia’s best-ever opening partnership of 128 runs. The hosts posted a total of 163 for five. Arundhati Reddy, who had a catch dropped on her final ball of the innings off Ashleigh Gardner (10 not out), delivered crucial breakthroughs by dismissing both openers, finishing with figures of 4-0-30-2.
On a flat pitch, Voll and Mooney dominated the Indian bowlers, adding 128 runs in 14.5 overs before Mooney was dismissed just four runs short of her half-century. This partnership surpassed the previous record of 115 runs set by Alyssa Healy and Mooney against India in March 2020 at Melbourne.
Voll capitalised on India’s wayward bowling, hitting 11 fours and a six in her 57-ball 88. Mooney supported well, contributing 46 off 39 balls with four boundaries, before being caught by Shafali Verma off Arundhati’s penultimate ball of the 15th over.
