There have been many famous fallouts in Bollywood, but none has been talked about, dissected, and revisited quite like the one between Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Two of the biggest stars the industry has ever produced, once extremely close friends, falling out so publicly that it defined an entire era of Bollywood gossip. Years before anyone had fully processed what had happened between them, Salim Khan, Salman’s father and one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated screenwriters, sat down with Lehren Retro and said something that cut right to the heart of it.

Salim Khan began by talking about love and relationships, about his son, his wife, the differences that exist in every bond and why love does not need to be explained or justified.
“You can love people with differences. Mere aur Salman ke andar pachaas se zyada differences honge thinking ke andar, mere bete ke andar, but I love him. Meri biwi mein aur mujh mein pachaas differences honge, but I love her," he said.
He then got to the question everyone had been circling around about his son and Shah Rukh Khan. “Sab bol rahe Shah Rukh Khan Salman Khan ki ladai ho gayi hai. Atharah baras purani dosti. Kis baat ki dosti? Rivals ke beech dosti ho sakti hai? Rivals mein ek courtesy ho sakti hai. Ke hello, kaise ho bhai? Kya kar rahe ho yahan? Hum shooting kar rahe hain. Achha, aap kya kar rahe ho? Arre bhai happy birthday. Arre bhai Salman mubarak ho tumhari picture chal gayi."
He went on to add, “Ye kya possible hai ki do rivals ke andar mohabbat ho sakti hai? Dosti ho sakti hai? Rishta sirf mohabbat ka hota hai. Yeh kya possible hai ki do rivals ke andar mohabbat ho sakti hai, dosti ho sakti hai? Rishta sirf mohabbat ka hota hai."

The fight itself reportedly took place on the night of July 16, 2008, at Katrina Kaif’s birthday party at Olives restaurant in Bandra. According to multiple reports, Salman Khan taunted Shah Rukh about his TV show Kya Aap Panchvi Paas Se Tez Hain and accused him of being selfish. Salman was reportedly also upset that Shah Rukh had refused to do a cameo in his film Main Aur Mrs. Khanna, despite Salman having done one for Shah Rukh in Om Shanti Om. Things escalated further when Salman reportedly made comments about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, his former girlfriend, and Shah Rukh reportedly asked him to speak about her with respect. The two nearly came to blows in full view of the film fraternity. It was the biggest Bollywood scandal of the year. The silence that followed lasted five years.
Then came Baba Siddique’s Iftaar party in 2013. Siddique reportedly seated Shah Rukh next to Salim Khan during the event. When Salman walked over, Shah Rukh stood up. The two hugged and just like that, five years of silence ended in one moment.
Since then, the two have been genuinely warm with each other. Salman made guest appearances in Shah Rukh’s blockbusters Zero in 2018 and Pathaan in 2023, and Shah Rukh returned the favour in Tubelight. But perhaps the moment that said the most about where they actually stood came in October 2021, when Shah Rukh’s son Aryan Khan was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau in a drugs case following a raid on a cruise off the Mumbai coast. Aryan spent 25 days in Arthur Road Jail before being granted bail and was eventually cleared of all charges in May 2022, with the officer leading the investigation later being charged with corruption and extortion by the CBI.
During those weeks, Salman was one of the first people to show up. He drove straight to Mannat, Shah Rukh’s Bandra residence, on the night of the arrest. His car was mobbed by the media outside, but he went in anyway and stayed for an hour. Salim Khan accompanied him on a subsequent visit as well.
