'None Of Our Business': Putin Distances Russia From Trump's Greenland Plan Amid US-Europe Rift
Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly distanced Moscow from US President Donald Trump's push to acquire Greenland, saying the issue does not concern Russia even as it fuels tensions between Washington, Denmark and NATO allies.
Speaking during a televised meeting of Russia's Security Council late Wednesday, Putin said Greenland's future was a matter for others to resolve.
“What happens to Greenland is none of our business," he said, as Trump's remarks on bringing the Arctic island under US control continue to unsettle Europe and strain transatlantic unity.
Putin, however, used the moment to criticise Denmark's historical treatment of Greenland, describing Copenhagen's rule over the territory as colonial in nature.
He claimed Denmark had often been “harsh, if not cruel" towards the island, before quickly adding that the issue was not relevant to the current debate.
While Trump has cited security threats, including from Russia, as a justification for US control over Greenland, Putin struck a conciliatory tone, expressing apparent sympathy for the island's residents and showing little resistance to Trump's ambitions.
The Kremlin has neither endorsed nor opposed the plan, opting instead for a cautious, non-committal posture.
Analysts see Moscow's response as a calculated attempt to exploit growing divisions within the Western alliance.
Trump's Greenland push has sparked sharp disagreements with European partners, and Russian officials and state-backed commentators have reacted with a mix of satisfaction and curiosity.
Some have portrayed Trump's move as historic, while others argue it weakens NATO and the European Union by shifting Western attention away from Russia's war in Ukraine.
Despite maintaining public distance, Moscow is not indifferent to the Arctic's strategic importance. Greenland's potential transfer to US control raises long-term security and economic questions for Russia, which has expanded its military footprint in the Arctic, home to its Northern Fleet and key strategic assets.
The region also carries historic significance as a former site of Soviet nuclear testing.
As diplomatic friction between the US and Europe intensified this week, Trump reiterated at the World Economic Forum in Davos that he wants to “get Greenland" but insisted he would not use force. He also dismissed European objections and argued that NATO should not obstruct US ambitions in the Arctic.
The Kremlin's careful messaging has been echoed by Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who earlier this week underscored the global implications of a US takeover of Greenland. Without judging the legality or merits of the move, Peskov said some experts believe such a step would secure Trump a lasting place in world history, an assessment he said was difficult to dispute.
Putin himself has previously noted that US interest in Greenland is not new, recalling that Washington explored acquiring the territory as early as the 19th century and again after World War II.
He also pointed to historical precedents, including Denmark's sale of the Virgin Islands to the United States in 1917 and Russia's sale of Alaska to Washington in 1867.
Meanwhile, Trump claimed in Davos that Putin had agreed to join his proposed “Board of Peace", a loosely defined grouping of global leaders that has already drawn criticism from several US allies.
The Kremlin has so far taken a measured approach, saying it is still reviewing the proposal.
Addressing a cabinet meeting in Moscow, Putin said Russia's foreign ministry had been tasked with examining the documents related to the initiative and consulting with strategic partners. “Only after that will we be able to respond to the invitation," he said.
Trump has said permanent membership on the board would require a USD 1 billion contribution, a demand Putin suggested could theoretically be met using Russian assets frozen under the previous US administration.

He added that such funds could instead be used to rebuild territories affected by the Ukraine conflict once a peace agreement is reached.
Reiterating Russia's hands-off stance on the Greenland issue, Putin said the matter would ultimately be settled by the countries involved. “It certainly doesn't concern us," he said, signalling that Moscow is content to watch from the sidelines as tensions play out within the Western alliance.
