Raksha Bandhan 2026 will be celebrated on August 28, with the shubh muhurat in the morning and Bhadra ending before sunrise in most cities. The festival marks the bond between siblings, celebrated with Rakhi tying, prayers, and traditional rituals.

As the festive season begins, markets are filled with colourful rakhis and sweet shops are buzzing with excitement. Families start planning for this meaningful day, where love, care and traditions come together.
Mark your calendar for Friday, August 28. That’s when the festival falls this year, timed to the Purnima, the full moon in the Hindu month of Shravana.
As per Drik Panchang,
Purnima begins: August 27, 9:08 am
Purnima ends: August 28, 9:48 am
Festival timings may slightly differ from city to city because they are calculated based on local sunrise and Panchang.

In New Delhi, the best time to tie Rakhi is:
5:57 am to 9:48 am on August 28
This gives families enough time in the morning to perform the rituals peacefully. The Bhadra period ends before sunrise, so it will not affect the Rakhi ceremony in Delhi.
If you are in another city, it is always better to check your local Panchang for exact timing.
Take Mumbai, for instance:
Rakhi muhurat: 6:22 am to 9:48 am
Purnima starts: August 27, 9:08 am
Purnima ends: August 28, 9:48 am
Bhadra: over before sunrise, no issue there either
Some families also keep an eye on Rahu Kaal and steer clear of it during the ceremony. Small detail, but it matters to a lot of households—so again, check what applies where you live.

There’s nothing complicated about the ceremony itself. It goes something like this:
Start with a bath, then get the puja thali ready: rakhi, roli or kumkum, rice (akshat), a diya, and sweets all go in.
The sister applies tilak on her brother’s forehead.
She does the aarti, praying for his health and happiness.
Then comes the actual tying of the rakhi on his wrist.
The brother gives something back a gift, a promise, whatever feels right.
And it usually ends the way these things should: sweets, laughter, everyone just hanging around together.
No two families do it the same way. Some add extra steps, some skip a few—but the heart of it never changes.
Raksha Bandhan was never really about the ritual itself. It’s about trust, love, and the kind of support that lasts a lifetime between siblings. Big celebration or small, quiet one at home, none of that matters as much as what the day stands for. So this Rakhi, slow down for a minute. Hold onto the old memories, and go make a few new ones with the people who matter.
