The New Raksha Bandhan Promise

The New Raksha Bandhan Promise: Why Protecting Your Sibling Starts With Noticing Their Mental Health
Raksha Bandhan has always symbolised protection. Traditionally, that promise has been associated with standing up for a sibling, keeping them safe from harm or simply being there when life becomes difficult. But in a world where mental health challenges are increasingly common and often invisible, perhaps the meaning of protection deserves to evolve.
Today, protecting a sibling may not always involve solving their problems. Sometimes, it begins with something much simpler: noticing when they are no longer themselves.
Mental health struggles rarely announce themselves dramatically. More often, they unfold quietly through subtle behavioural changes that are easy to dismiss as stress, work pressure or a passing bad mood.
According to Dr Vivek Barun, Senior Consultant, Neurology & Epilepsy, Artemis Hospitals, a sibling who is usually cheerful may suddenly become withdrawn, stop responding to messages, avoid family gatherings or lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. Changes in sleep patterns, appetite, work or academic performance, persistent irritability, unexplained fatigue and social withdrawal can also signal emotional distress.
“These changes do not necessarily mean someone has a mental health disorder," Dr Barun explains. “But when they are persistent or noticeably different from a person’s usual behaviour, they deserve attention rather than dismissal."
That is where siblings often occupy a unique position.
Unlike colleagues, friends or even parents, siblings witness one another across different phases of life. They recognise familiar habits, inside jokes, routines and personality traits that outsiders may never notice. Because of that shared history, they are often the first to recognise when something feels different.
Dr. Praveen Gupta, Chairman, MAIINS, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, believes this familiarity gives siblings an important responsibility.
“Mental health problems don’t always come knocking at one’s door," he says. “They may appear as silence, withdrawal from friends, a loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed, insomnia, irritability or someone insisting that everything is fine."
Those signs are frequently explained away as temporary stress. Yet, Dr. Gupta points out, siblings are uniquely placed to notice the missed phone calls, skipped family gatherings, changing sense of humour or unusual silence that may otherwise go unnoticed.
Recognising these changes, however, does not mean becoming a therapist.
Experts emphasise that the most valuable role a sibling can play is creating a space where difficult conversations feel safe.
Instead of responding with phrases such as “Don’t worry" or “Everyone goes through this," Dr. Barun recommends beginning with a simple observation:
“You don’t seem like yourself lately. Do you want to talk?"
The goal isn’t to offer immediate solutions or force someone to open up. It is to listen, without judgement, comparison or interruption and allow a loved one to feel heard.
Dr Gupta echoes this approach, suggesting that even asking, “You haven’t been acting like your usual self. Is everything alright?" can become the first step towards meaningful support.
Just as importantly, experts caution against confusing emotional support with professional care.
Supporting a sibling does not mean carrying the weight of their struggles alone. If emotional distress begins affecting daily life, relationships, sleep, work or studies, gently encouraging them to seek professional help can be one of the most caring things a sibling can do. Sometimes, simply offering to accompany them to an appointment can make seeking help feel less overwhelming.
Small gestures also matter more than people often realise.
Regular phone calls, inviting a sibling out for a walk, sharing a meal or simply checking in consistently can help preserve connection during periods when someone may feel tempted to withdraw from the people around them.
There is, however, one situation where hesitation should never replace action.
Both doctors stress that expressions of hopelessness, self-harm or statements about not wanting to live should always be treated as medical emergencies. Such conversations require immediate support from trusted family members and qualified mental health professionals. No one should be expected to navigate those moments alone.
Perhaps that is the most meaningful lesson Raksha Bandhan can offer today.
Protection isn’t always about shielding someone from life’s difficulties. Often, it means recognising when they are quietly struggling, listening without judgement and reminding them that asking for help is not something they have to do by themselves.
This Raksha Bandhan, the strongest promise may not be “I’ll fix everything." It may simply be “I’ll notice when you’re not okay and I’ll stay with you while you find the help you need."
