Punjab To Award Harmanpreet Kaur ₹1.5 Crore But No Promotion; Harleen & Amanjot To Get Prize Money And Jobs

The Punjab government is set to honour three of its own who were part of India's historic Women's ODI World Cup-winning cricket team. Each player — Harmanpreet Kaur, Harleen Deol, and Amanjot Kaur — is expected to receive a cash award of ₹1.5 crore.

Harleen and Amanjot are also likely to be offered government jobs in recognition of their achievements. The grand felicitation ceremony will take place once team captain Harmanpreet returns to Punjab, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expected to personally meet and honour the players.

Officials stated that the government is finalising the details of the rewards package, and a formal announcement will be made soon after Harmanpreet's arrival. While the administration is exploring special honours for the captain, her promotion within the Punjab Police remains off the table for now.

Harmanpreet, who serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was reinstated to the post earlier this year and still requires additional years of service before being eligible for promotion to Superintendent of Police (SP).

Harmanpreet's police career has seen its share of ups and downs. She was first appointed DSP in 2018 after leading India to the 2017 World Cup final, but controversy erupted over her graduation degree from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, which was not UGC-affiliated then. The issue led to her demotion to constable. However, she continued her service, completed her education through distance learning from Lovely Professional University, and was reinstated as DSP in 2024.

Harmnapreet is only the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev (1983) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (2011) to win a senior ODI World Cup trophy for India, but is the first woman captain to achieve this feat.

For their World Cup victory, the Indian team received $4.48 million, which is about ₹40 crore, from the International Cricket Council (ICC). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) further honoured the team with a ₹51 crore reward.
