However, when daily protein intake is supplemented especially through powders, bars, and other processed sources, it can easily exceed what the human body requires. Beyond a certain point, the benefits of higher protein intake plateau, and the risk of adverse effects begins to rise.
Overeating protein, particularly from animal sources, can strain the kidneys and liver, cause dehydration, disrupt calcium balance, and negatively impact gut and microbiome health. Higher protein consumption often comes at the expense of fibre-rich foods such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Fibre is crucial for both digestive health and cardiovascular wellness.
Protein needs also vary depending on attributes such as age, sex, activity level, and overall health. Blindly following high-protein trends can create unhealthy habits over time. Instead, intentional, evidence-based eating can provide sustained energy, support cognitive function, and maintain a resilient body. Paying attention to the body's actual needs helps cultivate a healthier relationship with food and overall well-being.
