Poor Air Quality And Throat Health
Rising pollution levels are increasingly linked to throat discomfort and respiratory irritation across urban India.

Poor Air Quality And Throat Health: Key Symptoms To Watch And When To Seek Medical Help

As air quality levels continue to fluctuate especially in urban areas, many individuals find themselves battling recurrent throat irritation and infections. Pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, and sulphur dioxide can inflame the delicate lining of the throat, triggering symptoms that are often overlooked until they worsen. Understanding what to watch out for, and knowing when to seek medical care, can prevent minor discomfort from developing into a more serious illness.

Dr Abhijit Ahuja, Pulmonologist, Saifee Hospital Mumbai, shares everything you need to know:

When air quality dips, the respiratory system reacts almost immediately. The most common symptoms include:

1. Persistent throat irritation

A scratchy or burning sensation is often the first sign. Pollutants dry out the mucous membranes, leading to discomfort that may worsen with talking or swallowing.

2. Dry cough or frequent throat clearing

Exposure to pollutants triggers the body's protective response to expel irritants, causing bouts of dry coughing or the urge to clear the throat repeatedly.

3. Hoarseness or voice changes

Inflammation of the vocal cords due to polluted air can result in a hoarse, tired, or strained voice, even in individuals who do not use their voice extensively.

4. Increased mucus production

In some people, the throat responds by producing excess phlegm, leading to congestion, stickiness in the throat, or the sensation of mucus dripping from the nose.

5. Recurring sore throat or mild infections

Prolonged exposure lowers local immunity, making the throat more vulnerable to bacterial or viral infections. This may present as pain while swallowing, mild fever, or swollen glands.

While mild symptoms often settle with rest, hydration, and reducing exposure to pollutants, medical attention becomes necessary in the following situations:

1. Symptoms lasting more than 3–5 days

If throat discomfort or cough persists beyond this period, it may indicate a developing infection or significant inflammation requiring treatment.

2. Difficulty swallowing or breathing

These are red flags for severe swelling or infection and warrant immediate medical evaluation.

3. High fever or worsening pain

These signs often point to bacterial infection or complications that require antibiotics or specialised care.

4. Repeated episodes within a short period

Frequent throat infections during poor AQI days may indicate heightened sensitivity, allergies, or an underlying respiratory condition.

5. Symptoms in vulnerable individuals

Children, the elderly, asthmatics, COPD patients, and those with weakened immunity should consult a doctor early even if symptoms appear mild.

Understanding early symptoms and acting promptly can prevent throat irritation from escalating into a more serious issue. As poor air quality becomes increasingly common, staying alert, managing exposure, and seeking timely medical advice play a crucial role in safeguarding respiratory health.
