‘Pollution, South India Wins For For Non-Veg Food’: Reddit User’s 6 Reasons Why Delhi-NCR Is ‘Cooked’

‘Pollution, South India Wins For For Non-Veg Food’: Reddit User’s 6 Reasons Why Delhi-NCR Is ‘Cooked’
A Noida resident has declared Delhi and the National Capital Region “done," comparing its food, jobs, safety, and pollution unfavourably with other Indian cities." The discussion came up on a Reddit post, titled “Delhi NCR is cooked, no point of defending it now." The author shared their impressions after spending time in Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
Redditor's 6 Reasons Why Delhi Is Worse
According to the post, Delhi NCR, once considered a hub for culture, jobs, and food, no longer stands out. On food, the author claims South India “easily wins," particularly for non-vegetarians. “Food in NCR is overpriced," they wrote. “In the South, you can eat well for Rs 100- Rs 150, but here, for Rs 200, you'll get unhygienic Moradabadi-style biryani at best."
“Apart from variety, NCR doesn't really stand out anymore. If you compare food with Hyderabad or Bengaluru, especially for non-vegetarians, South India easily wins," the post read.
Jobs, Traffic, Safety
The post also criticised job opportunities in the NCR region, especially for IT professionals. “Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune are way ahead of North India in tech opportunities, and pay is actually better there," they said.
While traffic remains a major issue in all metros, safety and nightlife were areas where the differences stood out vividly. “In Pune, I saw people roaming freely, sitting outside their homes, enjoying winters at 12:30 AM. In NCR, you think twice before stepping out after 10–11 PM. The city just goes silent, and empty streets don't feel safe," the Reddit user wrote.
“I'm not talking about pubs or parties. I'm talking about normal life."
On real estate, the post compared, “In Gurugram, you won't get anything decent under Rs 1-1.5 crore. In Pune, you can get a decent 2BHK in the same budget. Rent for a 3BHK is similar everywhere." “In Bengaluru (HSR Layout), you'll find similar options around Rs 90 lakhs," they wrote.
Delhi's Air Quality Woes
The post was particularly scathing about air quality. “Today, the AQI in Noida/Delhi is around 700+. Politicians sit in air-purified cabins saying pollution is ‘comparatively lower this year.'" The real problem has become normalised, the author wrote, warning that pollution-related deaths may soon surpass other public safety concerns.
Ending on a pointed note, the author asked defenders of Delhi to experience other cities before drawing comparisons. “Comparing North India with South India is like comparing Babar Azam with Sachin Tendulkar," they concluded.
The post soon took off online.
A user commented, “Actually, pollution is terrible across most of India, especially in the North. Delhi, however, gets hit harder in winter because of its geography, ongoing construction, and emissions from factories and vehicles. To be honest, the entire country is in bad shape, we have just normalized it. Living with an AQI around 150- 200 is considered normal and doesn't even get much serious attention."
Another mentioned, “The AQI, It's around 908 today."
Someone shared their experience comparing Delhi with Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai, saying they prefer Delhi for its “large open spaces, wider roads, and better traffic outside peak hours".
They noted that safety depends on the area, with neighbourhoods having more Punjabi residents being safer for women, and that market areas remain lively until 1 AM. They routinely leave their home after 9 PM to avoid traffic and generally return by 11-2 AM, even later around holidays, without feeling unsafe. The resident praised Delhi and Mumbai's club and party scene, saying it surpasses Pune and Bengaluru, and mentioned that the latter felt jarring due to language barriers.
“Absolutely correct," a user wrote.

Delhi AQI Today
Delhi's air quality remains in the severe category, with AQI readings on Monday around 500 in several areas, far above safe levels for health. Dense smog is reducing visibility sharply and disrupting road and air travel across the capital region. NCR has been shrouded in thick polluted air.
