Pakistan's Oldest Newspaper Faces Global Mockery After Publishing ChatGPT Prompt
A major controversy has erupted in Pakistan's media circles after a glaring lapse by one of the country's most reputed newspapers. Dawn, regarded as the oldest and most credible publication in Pakistan, found itself at the centre of ridicule after a AI-generated prompt appeared in one of its business articles.
The incident came to light on November 12, when readers spotted an unusual note at the bottom of a business report published in the newspaper. A social media user shared a screenshot of the piece, revealing that it contained an unedited AI-generated prompt, one that clearly indicated the article had been written using AI.
The prompt, attributed to ChatGPT, read, “If you want, I can also create an even snappier ‘front-page style' version with punchy one-line stats and a bold, infographic-ready layout perfect for maximum reader impact. Do you want me to do that next?"
Once the screenshot went viral, netizens flooded social media platforms with criticism and mockery. Many expressed disappointment that a respected publication like Dawn had apparently published an AI draft without human oversight. Some users even went as far as declaring they would no longer read the newspaper, citing a “loss of journalistic credibility".
The publication, which first began its journey in Delhi in 1941 before moving to Lahore after the Partition in 1947, has long been viewed as a symbol of editorial integrity and quality journalism in South Asia. But this episode has sparked a wider debate about the unchecked use of AI in newsrooms, and further raised concerns over editorial ethics, authenticity, and the erosion of human judgment in media.
