Dhurandhar: The Revenge isn’t just trending for its box office numbers; it is also giving people a lot to talk about, especially when it comes to its characters. The film has been surrounded by chatter, from being called a “propaganda" film to theories about which real-life personalities inspired its roles. But one character that has particularly grabbed attention is Jameel Jamali, played by Rakesh Bedi, who many believe is inspired by Pakistani politician Nabeel Gabol.
The interesting part is that Gabol himself had earlier acknowledged this connection. But the real twist now is that the same person who once seemed comfortable being linked to the character is no longer on the same page.
Who Is Nabeel Gabol?
Nabeel Gabol, who was born and raised in Lyari, Karachi, is a veteran Pakistani politician who currently serves as a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-239 Karachi South-I for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). He has also represented Lyari for the PPP for a long time.
He has also been the Minister of State for Ports and Shipping between 2008 and 2011 and became the youngest Deputy Speaker of the Sindh Assembly from 1993 to 1996. While he has largely been associated with the PPP, his political journey also includes a brief stint with Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) between 2013 and 2017.
When the first Dhurandhar film was released, Gabol didn’t shy away from the comparisons. In fact, he openly claimed that Jameel Jamali was based on him. From TV debates to media appearances, he spoke about it frequently and owned the character.
What Changed After Dhurandhar: The Revenge?
Things seem different now. After the release of the second film, in which the character is shown to be an Indian spy, Gabol has gone quiet and is keeping a low profile.
During an interview, when asked about the portrayal, he said, “Main bilkul khush nahi hu kyuki Jameeli Jamali jo dikhaya gaya hai, ek toh humare Lyari ka ye culture nahi hai ki Lyari ke andar aapko disco nazar aaye, Lyari mein koi Punjabi mein bole kyuki Baloch Punjabi mein nahi bolta hai…Lyari ke culture mein mera ek dabangg role tha, maine bade dabangg tarike se Lyari mein riyasat ki hai. Usme ek chaaplusi wala kirdar dikahya gaya toh wo role mere par fit baithta nahi hai…koi dehsat wagera kuch nahi hota tha (I am not happy at all because the way Jameel Jamali has been shown – this is not Lyari’s culture. You won’t see discos there and Baloch people don’t speak Punjabi. In Lyari, I had a strong, dominant role. But here, a sycophantic character has been shown which doesn’t suit me…there was nothing like fear or terror)."
Internet Doesn’t Miss The U-Turn
His shift in stance has caught people’s attention online. Many users pointed out how his tone seems to have changed after the sequel.
One user commented, “So it was based on your life when it was a hit, and pure fiction when the sequel dropped? That’s some next-level character development."
Another wrote, “Bro went from ‘That’s literally me’ to ‘I have never seen this man in my life’ faster than a Karachi power outage. Character development at its finest."
“Bro had no idea what Aditya was cooking," someone else joked while another added, “Aditya Dhar ne yahin se fielding set kr di iski (Aditya Dhar had already set the field for him from here)."
Rakesh Bedi Breaks His Silence
Amid all this, Rakesh addressed the claims around the character. Speaking to India Today, he said, “I didn’t portray him at all. I don’t understand why he is identifying himself with the character. I simply adopted a particular look for the role. Now, if someone feels that my appearance resembles his, what can I really do about it? It’s not my fault."
He further added, “Perhaps because of the wig and styling, he might feel there is a slight resemblance. That’s his interpretation. But there isn’t much we can do about that."
Dhurandhar: The Revenge Roars At The Box Office
Dhurandhar: The Revenge is showing no signs of slowing down. The Aditya Dhar directorial has already crossed an impressive Rs 575 crore net in India within just six days of its release.
Released on March 19, the spy thriller takes the story forward, following Ranveer Singh as Hamza Ali Mazari, an Indian spy at the centre of the narrative.
Apart from Ranveer and Rakesh, the film also stars R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt and Sara Arjun.
