Uttar Pradesh: Over 60 BLOs booked in Noida, three suspended in Bahraich amid voter roll revision

The administration in Uttar Pradesh's Noida has registered first information reports against more than 60 booth-level officers and seven supervisors for allegedly failing to comply with orders from senior officials during the revision of voter rolls in the state, The Indian Express reported on Monday.
In the state's Bahraich district, the administration has ordered FIRs against five booth-level officers, withheld salaries of 42 personnel and suspended a village-level revenue officer for alleged negligence, PTI quoted officials as saying on Sunday.
On Friday, the district administration suspended two booth-level officers deployed in the Matera and Balha Assembly segments.
Uttar Pradesh is among 12 states and Union Territories where the Election Commission began the enumeration phase of the exercise on November 4.
The booth-level officers are typically primary school teachers and anganwadi or health care workers, who are employed by state governments. They are responsible for distributing and collecting enumeration forms as part of the ongoing exercise.
They are required to go door-to-door, check the identities of new voters and verify the details of those who have died or permanently moved out of an area.
According to the FIRs registered in Noida, the booth-level officers allegedly “did not report to their assigned areas” and “failed to adhere to orders issued by senior officials”, reported The Indian Express.
Four FIRs were filed under the 1950 Representation of the People Act on orders from District Magistrate Medha Rupam, who is also the district election officer for Noida.
Two of the cases were registered in Dadri, naming 12 anganwadi workers and government school teachers, as well as six persons who had been appointed as supervisors.
In Greater Noida's Ecotech Phase 1 police station, an FIR was registered against 33 booth-level officers and one supervisor. Seventeen booth-level officers were booked in Jewar.
In Bahraich, those suspended on Friday were Shama Nafees, a primary school headmistress, and Anurag, an assistant teacher. Both of them allegedly failed to report for duty despite repeated reminders from senior officials, The Indian Express reported.
Among those who were booked in the district is Abhishek Singh. An FIR was registered against him on a complaint by a Bharatiya Janata Party leader, who alleged that Singh used offensive language during a phone conversation regarding the distribution of voter roll revision forms. He was booked on charges of criminal intimidation and defamation, The Indian Express reported.
The voter roll revision process is scheduled to continue until December 4.
In addition to Uttar Pradesh, the voter rolls are also being revised in West Bengal, Kerala, Rajasthan, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Puducherry, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep.
Assembly polls are expected to take place in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry in the first half of 2026.
The draft electoral rolls for the 12 states and Union Territories will be published on December 9. Voters can file claims and objections from December 9 to January 8, while hearings and verifications will take place from December 9 to January 31. The final electoral rolls are to be published on February 7.
Several petitions have been filed before the Supreme Court against the exercise over concerns that the special intensive revision of voter rolls could disenfranchise eligible voters.
The voter list revision in Bihar was announced by the poll panel in June and completed ahead of the Assembly elections in November. In the final electoral roll published on September 30, at least 47 lakh voters were excluded.
