OpenAI To Start Showing Ads On ChatGPT? Here’s What The Company Has Said

ChatGPT has been in the news lately for varied reasons and one of them relates to the possibility of OpenAI bringing ads on ChatGPT for users. The company is looking at different ways to make money and ads are probably the easiest but the most invasive form of earning revenue.

Some users have even talked about seeing ads within the ChatGPT interface which many are not pleased about and now the company has responded to those rumours with a direct answer. The head of ChatGPT has taken these rumours into his own hands and publicly confirmed that OpenAI is not doing any live tests for ads on ChatGPT.

OpenAI Says No To Ads?

Nick Turley has tried his best to sort out the confusion around ads being tested on ChatGPT. He assures that OpenAI is not doing any live tests for ads, and if you see any clip showing that, it is not real. The company's chief for ChatGPT says they will take a thoughtful approach and it will be designed to respect people's trust on ChatGPT.

This statement on X confirms two things. One is related to the ads being tested with the public, and second the company doesn't say ads will never come to ChatGPT. It is likely that OpenAI is testing ads internally and we might hear more on this in the coming months.

I'm seeing lots of confusion about ads rumors in ChatGPT. There are no live tests for ads – any screenshots you've seen are either not real or not ads. If we do pursue ads, we'll take a thoughtful approach. People trust ChatGPT and anything we do will be designed to respect that.— Nick Turley (@nickaturley) December 6, 2025

Ads have been the launch vehicle for Google and Meta (earlier Facebook) to earn billions for many years. Digital advertising has become a model that many companies have adopted since then. Even Apple has got ads in the form of suggested apps on the App Store with more products to see ads in the near future.

But OpenAI eyeing the ads space is a bone of contention, mostly because of the certain AI element attached to it.

You use ChatGPT to have personal or even confidential conversations and some of that might be very important. Now, imagine if ChatGPT uses that data to push ads around a therapist or any product relevant to the data available, that's where the privacy concerns are more serious with respect to ads on ChatGPT.
