At a Unite the Kingdom rally organised by Tommy Robinson, anti-immigrant protesters were spotted consuming Indian street food, presenting a striking contrast to their slogans. The event, marred by violence and injuries to police officers, featured far-right figures and anti-immigrant rhetoric. The sight of protesters enjoying South Asian snacks became a symbol of the contradictions within the movement.
It was one of those moments where reality outpaces satire. At Tommy Robinson's Unite the Kingdom rally, billed as a mass show of resistance to immigration, anti-migrant protesters were filmed enjoying Indian street food, onion bhajis, samosas, biryanis and naan wraps, in between chants of “send them home.”
Clips circulating online captured crowds draped in English and Union Jack flags queuing at Southbank Centre food stalls with names like Indian Street Food and Curry Shack. For a march centred on railing against immigration, the sight of demonstrators biting into South Asian snacks struck many as a contradiction too rich to ignore. Social media lit up with jokes about “cultural appropriation served with mint chutney.”What began as a gathering of an estimated 110,000 to 150,000 people soon descended into violence. According to the Metropolitan Police, 26 officers were injured, four of them seriously, after being punched, kicked and hit with bottles, flares and other projectiles. At least 24 arrests were made, with more expected. Offences included common assault and possession of offensive weapons.Police confirmed that clashes broke out when Robinson's supporters tried to break through security barriers separating them from a counter-demonstration by Stand Up to Racism. Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist noted: “Many attended to lawfully protest, but a significant number came intent on violence.”
While organisers promoted the event as a “free speech festival,” its messaging was unmistakably anti-immigrant. Placards declared stop the boats and we want our country back, while chants echoed calls to “send them home.” Ironically, in the same breath, supporters indulged in the very cuisines brought to Britain by the migrant communities they sought to vilify.
Far-right figures from across Europe and North America took to the stage, including French politician Eric Zemmour and German MP Petr Bystron, both referencing the controversial “Great Replacement” theory. Elon Musk, addressing the rally by video link, accused Britain's leaders of surrendering to migration and warned that “violence is coming to you. You either fight back or you die.”
Robinson himself, under his real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, claimed migrants were being handed more rights than “the British people that built this nation.”
For many watching, the rally's most memorable image wasn't the speeches or even the violence, but the queue of anti-immigrant protesters happily biting into Indian onion bhajis. It became a symbol of the contradictions at the heart of Britain's far-right movement, railing against migration while savouring its flavours.
