Antara, daughter of acclaimed photographer Jagdish Mali, made her debut in 1988 with Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge. Her acting skills, combined with her striking presence, quickly caught the attention of popular director Ram Gopal Varma.
Collaboration With Ram Gopal Varma
Recognising her potential, RGV cast Antara in several notable projects. Her filmography under his direction includes Prem Katha (Telugu), Mast (1999), Road (2002), Company (2002), in which she played Ajay Devgn's wife, Darna Mana Hai (2003) and Naach (2004) with Abhishek Bachchan.
Among these, her performance in Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon stood out as a tribute to the iconic star. Despite earning critical praise, the film did not achieve the commercial success expected.
The Decision to Quit Bollywood
Despite receiving guidance and support from Ram Gopal Varma, Antara struggled to find consistent success. Multiple projects failed to create a lasting impact at the box office, and by 2010, she chose to step away from the limelight. Her departure left fans and industry insiders wondering why such a talented actress exited so abruptly.
Personal Controversies
In 2013, Antara became the centre of controversy when actress Mink Brar accused her of abandoning her father, Jagdish Mali, after finding him in a disoriented state on the streets of Versova. At the time, Antara was pregnant and clarified that her father's occasional disorientation was due to diabetes, not mental instability. She also criticised Mink for allegedly using the situation for publicity. Tragically, Jagdish Mali passed away a few months later.

Salman Khan, on the situation, released a statement criticising Mali at that time, “Your father is seen walking in a semi-nude condition on the road and you are saying he doesn't need help… You tell me then who needs help?"
“When I got the message, I tried to contact few people. To help someone is simple," he added.
Talking about the photographer, Salman said, “Jagdish Mali is a very big photographer. We used to struggle to get a photo shoot with him," he said.

Since leaving the industry, Antara has maintained a low profile, avoiding interviews and public appearances. While her career in films was brief, her performances remain memorable, and she is remembered as one of Bollywood's most promising talents whose journey ended unexpectedly.
