Noida techie death: 90 minutes of cries, fog, and a deadly pit, how Yuvraj Mehta lost life as a helpless father stood a few feet away

A software engineer tragically died after his SUV plunged into a deep, water-filled pit in Greater Noida's Sector 150 on a foggy night. Despite desperate pleas for help and a father's helpless proximity, rescue efforts were hampered by dense fog and the pit's depth, raising serious safety lapse concerns.
A 27-year-old software engineer died after his SUV plunged into a deep, water-filled pit in Greater Noida's Sector 150 on a foggy night, leaving behind chilling questions over safety lapses and delayed rescue. Yuvraj Mehta fought for nearly 90 minutes to stay alive, crying for help, flashing his phone's torch and speaking to his father, before falling silent, even as his father stood just a few feet away, unable to reach him, a TOI report stated.
The accident occurred around 12.30 am when Mehta was returning home and negotiating a sharp turn near ATS Le Grandiose. In dense fog and poor visibility, his Grand Vitara smashed through a damaged boundary wall and plunged into an excavation dug for a commercial project.
A pit hidden by fog
Police said the plot was not secured with barricades, fencing, reflectors or warning lights, turning it into a deadly hazard, especially during winter fog. The pit, over 20 feet deep and filled with water, was almost invisible on the road. Also Read: 'Yuvraj kept pleading for help': Noida techie clung on to car's roof till last breath, dialled his father, shared his location but still couldn't be saved
Mehta, who did not know how to swim, managed to get out of the sinking vehicle and climb onto its roof as it slowly went under. He repeatedly flashed his phone's torch through the fog for 90 minutes, hoping someone would spot him.
A son's call, a father's helpless wait
Within minutes of the crash, Mehta called his father, Raj Mehta, a retired SBI director who lives in the same sector. He shared his WhatsApp location and told him he was trapped.Raj Mehta reached the spot quickly and dialled 112. In the thick fog, people standing near the pit could hear Yuvraj's desperate cries but could barely see anything.
A senior official involved in the rescue later said, “We could only see a thin ray of light, likely from his phone.” Another official said rescue teams “could not see even 10 metres” due to near-zero visibility.
Rescue attempts that fell short
Police and emergency services rushed to the site. Ropes were thrown into the pit first, but they did not reach close enough. Firefighters then brought in a crane, followed by ladders, but the distance and depth remained too much.SDRF personnel reached the spot early but did not have equipment suited for such a deep rescue. The NDRF was later called in from Ghaziabad, costing crucial time amid heavy fog.
A passerby, Moninder, an online delivery worker, jumped into the freezing water around 1.45am after hearing Mehta's cries. He searched for nearly half an hour but could not locate him in the murky pit.
‘He kept pleading for help'
Moninder later alleged delays in the rescue. “Yuvraj kept pleading for help. The administration is responsible for his death,” he said.Mehta's friend Pankaj Tokas alleged, “He was screaming at the top of his voice for help while standing on the car's roof. The cops who went initially said they could not swim. Cranes were called but no one entered the water to save him.”
Police maintained that extreme fog, cold weather and the depth of the water severely hampered rescue efforts.
An officer said, “We made all efforts to rescue him. But due to the depth of the water collected in the plot, it was difficult to save him in the darkness and dense fog.”
Cries fall silent
By around 1.45am, nearly an hour and a half after the crash, Mehta's cries stopped. His body was recovered at about 4.30 am, almost four hours after the accident.Police said preliminary findings pointed to dense fog and possible overspeeding, but also flagged the unsecured excavation as a major safety risk.
FIR against builders
Based on a complaint filed by Mehta's father, police registered an FIR against MZ Wishtown Planners and Lotus Greens Construction. The case was lodged under BNS sections related to culpable homicide, causing death by negligence, and acts endangering life. The FIR stated, “There was no barricading reflector around the plot, which caused the incident. There was serious negligence on the part of the builders.”
ACP Hemant Upadhyay said the case was registered at Knowledge Park police station on the basis of the family's complaint.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajeev Narayan Mishra described the incident as unfortunate but denied negligence. He said, “Police and fire department teams made efforts to save the youth. A fire department crane, ladder, makeshift boat and searchlights were used, but there was zero visibility at that time.”
He added, “Strict action will be taken as per law,” and said further investigation was underway. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Protests and action after death
Residents said the pit had been dug nearly two years ago for a mall project and left uncovered, with sewage water from nearby societies accumulating there. Locals claimed a similar accident had occurred days earlier, but no corrective steps were taken. After Mehta's death, residents staged protests and held a candle march demanding justice. Following the protest, the Noida Authority installed barricades at the site.
Noida Authority CEO Lokesh M issued showcause notices to officials responsible for traffic-related work in Sector 150 and terminated the services of junior engineer Naveen Kumar. He also directed departments to inspect safety measures at construction sites and submit reports.
A spokesperson for Lotus Greens said the plot had been transferred to Grihapravesh Group with the Noida Authority's approval in 2019–20.
A sole earner lost
Yuvraj Mehta lived with his father in Sector 150 and worked as a software engineer in Gurugram. He had lost his mother two years ago and was the family's sole earning member. What remains is a haunting account from a fog-choked night, a young man's desperate cries echoing across dark water, and a father standing just feet away, powerless to save his son.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
