Noida Man’s Side Hustle Disaster Serves As Wake-Up Call For People With ‘9 To 5 Jobs’: ‘Kuch Bhi Nahi Kar Sakte’
A Noida man's attempt to earn extra money through a side business has become a cautionary tale for many salaried employees. What appeared to be an easy approach to earn extra cash ended up being an expensive lesson in the difficulties of operating a small business.
Working a typical 9–5 job, Vishwas Verma decided to attempt operating a small food business next to the gym he regularly went to. He saw an empty store in the basement next to the gym and thought it would be a nice chance to provide gym patrons with healthy food and beverages.
Verma thought the firm would pay him fast because the rent was low, around Rs 10,000 a month. He and a friend opened the shop selling pineapple juice, boiled eggs, protein shakes, and even instant noodles (Maggi). They thought that after working out, gym patrons would frequently purchase these goods. However, things did not go as planned.
“Like many of us, I once believed small businesses are easy money…quick maths, instant profit. I believed it too… until I ran one myself," Verma wrote in an Instagram post.
Hidden Costs and Hard Reality
Verma quickly discovered that managing a small firm was more difficult than he thought. Setting a consistent pricing for juice was challenging because the cost of raw products, like pineapples, varied every day. The price of Rs 90 for a glass of pineapple juice hardly covered the cost of the fruit and processing.
“We don't understand how to fix this price … 90 rupees was a genuine cost of that juice. One glass of pineapple juice was enough. Now I don't understand how these juice vendors earn," Verma said in the Instagram video, speaking in Hindi.
The plan to sell boiled eggs also failed. Verma believed he could get eggs at a discount and turn a profit. In reality, eggs were more expensive than expected, and many of them were ruined when boiling, which increased losses.
“I thought that eggs are for 5 rupees. We will boil it and sell it for 10 rupees. First, I didn't get eggs for 5 rupees, I am getting eggs for 7-8 rupees everywhere … 2-4 eggs break while making. So, there is also a loss," Verma added.
He also attempted to sell Maggi packets at Rs 30 apiece, but there was little profit left after covering personnel, rent, and other costs.
In terms of protein shakes, Verma said, “Protein is expensive, and the costs in protein shake were already rising. The drink was priced at 150 rupees, thus, there wasn't much of a demand. That is a very costly item."
Location and Low Footfall Hurt Sales
The location of the store was another issue. It was located in a basement area that saw few people outside of gym hours, despite being near the gym. Beyond the gym patrons, there were not enough customers to sustain a steady operation. Later, Verma understood that the low rent was due to the limited number of frequent visitors to the vicinity.
“If you are opening a retail then you will have to pay more rent somewhere. Otherwise, less rent means that no one comes there. That's why the rent is less," he said.
Lesson for Salaried Workers
Following a failed side venture and shutting the shop, Verma warned anyone who might be considering launching a side company. He said that rather than discouraging entrepreneurship, the purpose of this piece was to highlight the value of planning, study, and reasonable expectations prior to making time and financial investments.
“This was what we discovered through that one shop. Now I know things. I can do better but whenever you get into such things. Selling tea for 15 rupees is not that simple," Verma concluded.
