Nitish Kumar, Samrat Choudhary chosen as JD(U), BJP legislative party heads in Bihar
Nitish Kumar and Samrat Choudhary are set to lead Bihar's new government. They were unanimously chosen to head their respective party legislature groups. This follows the NDA's strong performance in the recent assembly elections. The new government is slated to take shape soon. Nitish Kumar is expected to take oath as Chief Minister for a historic tenth term.
Nitish Kumar and Samrat Choudhary emerged on Wednesday as the two key political figures steering their alliances in Bihar, after both leaders were unanimously chosen to head the JD(U) and BJP legislature parties.
The move has set the stage for Kumar and Choudhary to be named the NDA's chief ministerial and deputy CM candidate once again.
“I thank the party leadership and all MLAs who have again given me a chance to lead the party. The BJP has expressed its faith in the BJP and the party will try to meet their expectations,” Choudary said.
Their appointments come as the NDA moves swiftly to put its new government in place following its decisive performance in the recently concluded assembly elections on November 14.
The BJP held its own meeting of newly elected MLAs in the state capital Patna, Vijay Kumar Sinha was also elected his deputy to Choudhary for the JD(U).
The selections were confirmed by Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, who attended the deliberations.
Choudhary secured his victory from Tarapur, while Sinha retained his Lakhisarai seat, helping the BJP notch 89 seats—its strongest showing in the state this time.
With the NDA partners—BJP, JD(U), LJP(RV), HAM, and RLM—collectively crossing the majority mark by a wide margin, the new government is slated to take shape on November 20, marking the alliance's emphatic return to power in Bihar.
The alliance secured a landslide victory with 202 seats in the 243-member House, where the JD(U) won 85 constituencies, while the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats.
Kumar is likely set to take oath as chief minister for a historic tenth term on Thursday at Gandhi Maidan, reinforcing his decades-long influence over Bihar's political landscape.
