FASTag Update: NHAI Simplifies KYV Process, Here’s What’s Changed

If uploading endless car photos and documents for FASTag verification has been giving you a headache, there's good news. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has simplified the ‘Know Your Vehicle' (KYV) process to make it faster and more hassle-free.

After months of complaints from users about frozen tags and confusing websites, the authority has now rolled out a more convenient system for everyone on the road.

What Is Know Your Vehicle (KYV)?

The Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification requires FASTag users to upload their vehicle's Registration Certificate (RC) and a photo of the vehicle to confirm that the FASTag is affixed to the correct vehicle.

This verification must be repeated every three years to prevent misuse. The NHAI circular also links KYV to the One Vehicle One Tag (OVOT) policy, which became mandatory on October 31, 2024, ensuring that each vehicle uses only one FASTag and vice versa.

Why NHAI Updated The KYV Process

The KYV process was introduced last year to plug loopholes in the FASTag system after reports surfaced that some truck drivers were allegedly using car tags to evade higher toll charges.

What began as a security measure soon turned into a hassle for many users. Vehicle owners faced technical issues while uploading multiple images and documents on non-friendly portals, and several even reported harassment at toll booths after their FASTags were abruptly deactivated due to incomplete KYV verification.

Now, the NHAI has stepped in to ease the process. As per new guidelines issued by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), an NHAI subsidiary, FASTag services will no longer be discontinued immediately for users who haven't completed KYV. Instead, vehicle owners will be given sufficient time and reminders to finish the process.

What Has Changed?

The new guidelines make the process considerably simpler and user-friendly.

No More Side Photos: Users of cars, jeeps, and vans now need to upload only one photo — a front image showing the number plate and FASTag on the windshield. Earlier, both front and side images were mandatory, with the side photo used to identify the vehicle's axles.

Automatic Data Fetch: The NHAI will now fetch vehicle registration details directly from the VAHAN database when users enter their vehicle number, chassis number, or registered mobile number. If multiple vehicles are linked to a single mobile number, the user can simply select the relevant one to complete the KYV verification.

Old FASTags Stay Active: FASTags issued before the introduction of the KYV policy will remain active unless complaints are raised regarding loose tags or misuse.

SMS Reminders: Issuing banks will now send SMS reminders to customers to complete the KYV process, reducing the risk of sudden deactivation.

Can Users File Complaints?

FASTag users can raise complaints or seek assistance by calling the National Highway Helpline at 1033 for any KYV-related issue or clarification with their issuing bank.

Moreover, the NHAI has directed that if users face technical or documentation issues while completing KYV, it will be the responsibility of the issuing bank to proactively reach out and help them complete the process before any suspension.

Why This Matters

The move to simplify KYV is part of NHAI's broader effort to strengthen and streamline the FASTag ecosystem. These changes come as India prepares for the rollout of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system — a barrier-less, camera-based tolling mechanism that aims to eliminate toll plazas and enable seamless highway travel.

By removing unnecessary steps and ensuring better user support, NHAI's latest update is expected to make digital tolling smoother, fairer, and more convenient for millions of Indian motorists.
