Nepal's Gen-Z and UML cadres clash again, curfew imposed in Bara district

Nepal Gen-Z Protests, curfew imposed in Bara district: Authorities in Nepal's Bara district have reimposed a curfew. This action aims to prevent clashes between youth groups and the CPN-UML party. Tensions escalated after a previous confrontation near Simara Airport. This follows deadly unrest in September triggered by a social media ban.
A curfew was re-imposed for the second day in Nepal's Bara district on Thursday as local authorities moved to contain anticipated clashes between the Gen-Z groups and cadres of the ousted former prime minister KP Sharma Oli's Communist Party of Nepal - Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), ANI reported.
The District Administration Office said the restriction will remain in force until 8 pm local time after youth returned to streets.
The order follows a fresh escalation of tension in Simara town of Bara on Wednesday, where the Police also fired teargas canisters after the confrontation escalated near Simara Airport, forcing the airport to halt operations.
The latest clashes follow the deadly uprising in September, which killed at least 76 people during demonstrations triggered by a brief social media ban.
Nepal's interim prime minister Sushila Karki has also appealed for calm and called on all parties to "refrain
from unwanted political provocation", and to trust the democratic process ahead of elections set for March 5, 2026. "I have directed the Home Administration and security agencies to work with utmost restraint and preparation to maintain peace and order," Karki said in a statement issued late on Wednesday. The former Chief Justice of Nepal also held a meeting with representatives of more than 110 parties.
"We want this country to be in the hands of a new generation and to be managed by people with vision," she told the meeting.
The unrest in September began after the former government moved to block social media platforms, but public frustration had been building for years. Prolonged economic stagnation and persistent corruption had left the country of 30 million on edge, setting the stage for wider turmoil. In the wave of violence that followed, protesters set fire to parliament, courts and several government offices. The crisis ended with the removal of four-time prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli, 73. Ram Chandra Karki, also 73, was then appointed interim prime minister to guide the Himalayan nation toward elections.
