The National Democratic Alliance has won the Assembly election in Bihar. Till 7.45 pm, the ruling alliance had bagged out 141 of the total 243 seats. The Opposition Mahagathbandhan was reduced to 35 seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the largest party in terms of seat share, winning 72 constituencies and leading in 17. This is one of the best performances of the BJP in the state.
Incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) had won 53 seats and was leading in 32. It is the second-largest party in terms of constituencies won and has nearly doubled its tally of 43 seats from the 2020 polls.
The main Opposition party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, was reduced to 25 seats this time, a sharp decline from the 75 constituencies it had won in 2020. The Congress' tally dropped to six.
Former political strategist Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj has failed to win any seat in the Assembly, despite contesting in 238 constituencies. Read on.

Among the eight constituencies in other parts of India where the counting of votes for the Assembly bye-elections took place on Friday, the Congress' Pramod Jain won in Rajasthan's Anta. In Telangana, party candidate Naveen Yadav V clinched the Jubilee Hills seat.
BJP candidate Devyani Rana secured a win in Jammu and Kashmir's Nagrota, while the Jay Dholakia won in Odisha's Nuapada. In Jammu and Kashmir, the Peoples Democratic Party's Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi defeated the National Conference's Aga Syed Mahmood Al-Mosavi in Budgam, which had been a National Conference bastion since 1977.
The Mizo National Front's R Lalthangliana won in Mizoram's Dampa. In Jharkhand, Somesh Chandra Soren from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, a Congress ally, won from Ghatsila. Read on.
The Union government has notified the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, bringing into effect the Digital Personal Data Protection Act passed in 2023. With this, the provision that amends the Right to Information Act also came into effect.
The Rules outline how personal data is to be collected, processed and protected by both the state and private entities.
The provisions amending the RTI Act bar the disclosure of personal information about public officials even when it may serve a larger public interest. Critics have described this change as a serious threat to the principles of transparency and accountability. Read on.
Why the draft personal data protection rules are contentious
Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have demolished the home of Umar Nabi, the man believed to have been driving the car that exploded in Delhi on November 10. Several reports have claimed that he was a key figure in a terror network spanning Kashmir, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
There are no provisions in Indian law that allow for the demolition of property as a punitive measure. However, the practice has become commonplace in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states. Read on.
The Kerala High Court has refused to defer the revision of electoral rolls in the state. The bench asked the Left Democratic Front government to approach the Supreme Court, which has directed the Election Commission to respond within two weeks on petitions filed against the exercise in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
The top court had on Tuesday directed the High Courts to keep in abeyance the petitions filed in relation to the exercise in the two petitioner states and also in Bihar. In view of this, the Kerala High Court told the state that “judicial discipline” demands that it refrain from hearing the matter. Read on.
