Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra: Over 4 lakh online registrations, govt assures no cap on pilgrims
Dehradun: The Char Dham Yatra, one of Uttarakhand’s most important religious pilgrimages, has already seen more than 4.4 lakh registrations this year.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Subodh Uniyal confirmed that no registration fee is being charged and assured that the government will not stop any pilgrim from participating in the sacred journey.
During the ongoing Assembly budget session in Gairsain, the issue of the Yatra was raised by several MLAs. Badrinath MLA Lakhpat Butola highlighted the problem of traffic jams at major stops along the route. He said pilgrims are often stuck for five to six hours due to poor traffic management. He demanded either the abolition of the registration system or the introduction of an offline registration option to ease the process.
MLA Vikram Singh Negi also raised concerns, stating that the number of pilgrims should not be capped. He argued that restricting devotees would go against the spirit of the pilgrimage. Instead, he suggested that the government should focus on better facilities and crowd management.
Responding to these concerns, Minister Subodh Uniyal said the government is working with sensitivity and commitment to streamline the Yatra. He explained that the registration system is not meant to restrict devotees but to ensure proper management and safety. Having detailed information about pilgrims allows authorities to issue timely alerts in case of accidents or emergencies.
Uniyal also pointed out the sharp rise in pilgrim numbers over the years. While only one million pilgrims visited in 2001, the figure rose to 5.1 million in 2025. This increase has put pressure on infrastructure, making registration and planning essential.
The government has assured that all necessary preparations will be completed by March 31. Instructions have been issued to the Jal Sansthan to ensure drinking water facilities and to the Border Roads Organisation to improve road connectivity. Waste management systems are also being put in place to maintain cleanliness along the pilgrimage routes.
The minister emphasized that the government’s priority is to provide a safe, smooth, and spiritually fulfilling experience for all devotees. He reiterated that no pilgrim will be prevented from joining the Yatra, regardless of the rising numbers.
With registrations crossing four lakh already, the Char Dham Yatra is expected to witness a massive turnout this year. The government’s assurances and preparations will be closely watched as devotees from across India and abroad prepare to embark on the sacred journey to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
