National Milk Day 2025: How India’s Dairy Innovators Are Shaping a Healthier Future
As India marks National Milk Day, the country reflects not only on its rich dairy legacy but also on a sector undergoing rapid transformation. Evolving consumer expectations, growing interest in functional nutrition, and a renewed focus on sustainability are influencing how brands, farmers, and households engage with dairy today.

Their closed-loop organic farming model has helped increase soil carbon from 0.5% to 2.5%, significantly improving water retention, biodiversity, and fodder quality. “Healthy soil leads to healthier fodder; when cows eat better, they produce cleaner, more wholesome milk and that cycle of goodness ultimately reaches the families we serve every day," Kumar says.
Today, the company works with over 2,700 organic farmers across Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, reaching more than 3 lakh families through its direct-to-home network. For Akshayakalpa, dairy is “a long-term commitment to health, nourishment, and a sustainable future, from our farms to every household we serve."
While organic and functional dairy gain momentum, value-added products continue to be at the heart of the sector's economic resilience. Dr K. Rathnam, CEO and Whole-time Director, Milky Mist, emphasizes their indispensable role, “Dairy continues to be an essential pillar of a healthy nation and rural livelihoods, especially through the growth of value-added products such as paneer, curd, cheese, and ghee. These categories not only enhance the daily diet of millions of families but also create economic sustainability for farmers across the country."
A significant portion of this progress is driven by women, who today play a larger role in farm operations and financial decision-making.
