Murthy couple may have declined to take socio-economic survey due to misunderstanding, says Karnataka CM

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated the ongoing socio-economic and educational survey is for all citizens. He believes Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and wife Sudha Murty misunderstood its purpose. The Murthy couple, along with other prominent figures, have opted out of the survey. The High Court has directed the government to ensure the survey remains voluntary.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy and wife Sudha Murty may not have participated in the ongoing socio-economic and educational survey due to a misunderstanding that it's meant only for backward classes.
“If the Murthy couple thought the survey was meant only for backward classes, it is incorrect. Looks like wrong information has gone to them leading to a sense of misunderstanding,” the CM told the media in Mysuru.
“I am making it clear: this survey is for everyone, regardless of one's caste and religion. It is for the entire population of seven crore in Karnataka,” Siddaramaiah said. On the Murthy couple's refusal to participate in the survey, Siddaramaiah said it was left to their choice.
When enumerators visited their house in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, the couple gave a signed undertaking addressed to the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission, refusing to participate in the survey, explaining why they were doing so. The couple said the information being sought may not be of any value to the government as they don't belong to the backward class.
Murty is a Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka.
Earlier, Union minister Pralhad Joshi and Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya (BJP) too said they would not take part in the exercise. Former Infosys board member Mohandas Pai too has stayed away from the survey.
The Murthy couple's stand followed an option given by the high court through an interim order last month. While allowing the survey to continue, the court directed the government to ensure it remains entirely voluntary and enumerators do not force citizens to disclose information if they are not willing.
BJP MLA S Suresh Kumar has sought an explanation from the State Government on how copies of an undertaking furnished by the Murthy couple to enumerators have leaked and made into social media. "Where is the question of the sanctity and privacy of data that the government claimed it would protect? Is not the State Govt supposed to protect the information/data shared by citizens? Is that not what the Government promised the High Court?" the former law minister asked.
"If a signed letter of Murthys is so freely available in public, with what face can the Govt promise protection of information shared by citizens in good faith? The Siddaramaiah Govt owes an explanation on this data leak," Kumar said.
Union Minister Joshi, Surya and the leader of the opposition in the state assembly R Ashoka had earlier expressed doubts over the intentions behind the survey.
The union minister had said that the government was gathering unnecessary information in the name of the survey and that the details gathered during the previous survey were now freely available.
The Congress government has been forced to take up a fresh enumeration of castes after the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) was flooded with complaints from political and religious leaders of dominant communities that the data gathered during the last survey was flawed.
The AICC leadership has pushed Siddaramaiah to model the census on the lines of socio-economic, education, employment, political and caste survey conducted by the Congress government in Telangana.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
