Mumbai is known for its relentless pace, soaring skyscrapers, and ever-expanding suburbs. But hidden in plain sight in Andheri is a geological wonder that precedes the city and even the last days of the dinosaurs. Any guesses? It is none other than Gilbert Hill, a 65-million-year-old volcanic basalt formation. It is one of only two such rock structures known to exist in the world.
Declared a National Monument in 1952, the monolithic column has remained untouched as the city grew rapidly around it, making it one of Mumbai's most extraordinary natural landmarks. The hill recently resurfaced online after a social media creator shared visuals and facts about the site, bringing attention to its history and striking beauty.
In the video going viral, content creator Brendan introduces viewers to Gilbert Hill. The rock rises approximately 200 feet high and features sharp, vertical walls that look almost knife-cut, though they are entirely natural.
A Temple With a Panoramic View
At the top of Gilbert Hill sits a small Gaondevi temple. To get up there, visitors climb nearly 250 steps carved directly into the rock. The climb is demanding, but the reward at the top is unmatched. The hilltop gives a stunning perspective over the city's suburbs.
Visitors are treated to a rare 360-degree view of suburban Mumbai, from high-rise residential towers and dense slum clusters to the nearby airport runway. On clear days, even the Arabian Sea can be seen shimmering in the distance.
“Only TWO rocks like this exist on Earth. One is hiding in Andheri, Mumbai, on prime real estate! Hidden in plain sight, Gilbert Hill is a 65-million-year-old volcanic basalt formation, created when molten lava cooled during the dinosaur age. Its sharp, vertical walls look almost machine-cut — but this isn't architecture. This is pure geology. Mumbai doesn't just grow upward. Sometimes, it grows around stories far older than itself," he wrote in the caption.
How Was It Formed
According to the user shared in the viral video, Gilbert Hill, on which the temple is situated, was formed during a massive volcanic eruption in the dinosaur era. “Dinosaurs ke time pe jab yaha volcanic eruption hua tha tab molten lava issi shape me jam gaya aur iska result ek basalt rock with knife-cut jaise straight walls. (During the time of the dinosaurs, a volcanic eruption occurred, and the molten lava solidified in this shape, resulting in a basalt rock formation with straight, knife-cut-like walls)," he shared.
Brendan went on to explain, “1952 me National Monument declare kiya gaya isliye aas paas ka area develop kiya gaya aur ye waisa ka waisa reh gaya. (It was declared a National Monument in 1952, which is why the surrounding area was developed while this formation remained untouched)."
Lift Facility Planned For Easier Access In Gilbert Hills
Access to Gilbert Hill may soon become easier. After years of discussion, authorities have approved a plan to install a capsule lift to take visitors to the top for stunning city views. A budget of Rs 5 crore has been sanctioned by the District Planning and Development Council (DPDC) for the Mumbai suburban zone.
According to government officials, the project has already received in-principle approval from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee in 2019. According to a senior government official, “The cost will include some beautification of the surrounding area. All permissions are in place, and we can assure you that the lift will not affect the structure. Once the work order is issued, it will take about three months for the lift to be thrown open to the public. The exact details of the type of elevator are being worked out, but it will be a capsule lift that allows visitors panoramic views of the city."
As Mumbai continues to grow upward and outward, Gilbert Hill remains unchanged, offering those who climb it a rare perspective above the chaos of city life.
