Mumbai Metro 3 Line: Why Hutatma Chowk Station Has Open-Sky Entry And Exit? What About Monsoon Season?
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has issued a clarification on the design of the upcoming Hutatma Chowk Metro Station on Line-3. Many had questioned why the station's entry and exit areas are left open without a roof. In response, MMRC posted on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that the design was carefully planned to preserve the heritage value of the area.
Officials explained that the station's design respects the historic significance of D.N. Road, Flora Fountain, and the Hutatma Chowk memorial. Most of the structures are being constructed underground to preserve the area's view, with only the lift shafts and some ventilation outlets visible above ground.
Respecting Heritage
According to MMRC, the entry and exit points are designed with “stone and glass" so they blend in with the surroundings. No large canopies will be used, as this would block the view of the historic area. The agency said this approach follows global practices used in heritage zones, where surface-level changes are kept to a minimum.
“These escalators are fit for fully outdoor usage," MMRC said on X, while adding that drainage and flood-prevention systems have been included to keep passengers safe, especially during the monsoon.
Input From Experts
The design was created after discussions with heritage experts and with official approval. MMRC highlighted that heritage architects were part of the planning process. The project also received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee, which oversees changes in historically important parts of the city.
“The design has been developed in consultation with heritage architects and has received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee," the post also mentions.
Modern Transit With Care
MMRC noted that once Metro Line 3 is complete, it will connect Colaba to SEEPZ and bring relief to Mumbai's crowded transportation system.
At the same time, the Hutatma Chowk station has been designed to maintain the city's heritage look. “This is a conscious and approved heritage-sensitive design," the corporation said in its statement, assuring that modern public transport and the city's history can coexist.
