Mercedes' George Russell Wins Season Opening Australian Grand Prix

Mercedes' George Russell Wins Season Opening Australian Grand Prix
George Russell produced a composed drive to win a chaotic season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, leading home Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli in a 1–2 finish after a fierce early battle with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
The pole-sitting Briton crossed the line 2.974 seconds ahead at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit, with Leclerc finishing third and Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth in a race that provided the first competitive test of Formula One’s new-look cars.
World champion Lando Norris was fifth for McLaren, more than 51 seconds behind the leader, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen staged an impressive recovery to finish sixth after starting 20th following a crash in qualifying.
There was heartbreak for home favourite Oscar Piastri, who crashed on his out-lap to the grid and was unable to start the race after his McLaren sustained heavy damage.
With the virtual safety car deployed several times, Russell remained composed to secure the sixth Grand Prix win of his career and his first since the Singapore Grand Prix last year.
“Feeling incredible. It was a hell of a fight in the beginning," Russell said. “We knew it was going to be challenging.
“I made a bad start and had some really tight battles with Charles at the start. Just really glad to cross the finish line."
Under new regulations, half of each power unit is now powered by battery energy, forcing drivers to recharge while braking or by lifting off the throttle to prevent the battery from draining.
The 58-lap Albert Park circuit posed a particular challenge due to its long sweeping straights, which drain battery power, and the relatively limited number of tight corners where drivers can recharge through braking.
Five drivers failed to finish as teams grappled with the changes, including Piastri, Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg, Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso.
“Was not the best start we could have wished for, lost a lot of places and I had to recover," said Antonelli, who had crashed heavily on Saturday and only made qualifying after extensive overnight repairs to his car.
“But overall it was a good race. The pace was really strong, especially at the end."
In fine conditions, Haas driver Ollie Bearman finished seventh, with rookie Arvid Lindblad eighth for Racing Bull. Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly completed the top 10.
“It was a very, very tricky race. None of us knew what to expect," said Leclerc.
“It has been quite challenging. It looked like Mercedes had a bit more pace than us today."
At the start, Leclerc—running on medium tyres—got ahead of Russell, while Antonelli dropped from second on the grid to seventh. Hamilton also made a strong getaway to move into third ahead of Hadjar.
Russell reclaimed the lead on lap two before Leclerc retook first place a lap later, as the front runners began to pull away. The lead changed hands repeatedly in a tense wheel-to-wheel battle, including three changes on lap eight alone.
The virtual safety car was first deployed on lap 12 after Hadjar’s car stopped on track. Russell and Antonelli used the opportunity to pit for hard tyres.
Leclerc and Hamilton stayed out, and when racing resumed the Ferraris held a 10-second advantage over Russell, with Lindblad, Antonelli and Verstappen completing the top six.
Another virtual safety car followed when Bottas retired, with Russell trailing the Ferraris by eight seconds when the race restarted.
Leclerc pitted on lap 26 as his tyres began to wear, while Hamilton stayed out but was soon overtaken by Russell before eventually stopping.
Russell then told his team over the radio that a one-stop strategy was viable and steadily extended his lead, with Antonelli moving into second place.
Ferrari were unable to mount a serious challenge thereafter, trailing the Mercedes by around 15 seconds and making little impression on their advantage in the second half of the race.
The Formula One season continues in China next weekend before moving to Japan. Rounds four and five, scheduled for Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, face uncertainty due to the ongoing war in Iran.
