Assam CM orders action after Congress leader sings Tagore-composed Bangladeshi anthem at meeting

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that he has ordered the police to take action against a Congress leader in the state who sang Rabindranath Tagore's Amar Sonar Bangla song during a party meeting. A part of the song is Bangladesh's national anthem.
The chief minister ordered the police to register a case of treason, PTI reported.
The song Amar Sonar Bangla, or my golden Bengal, was written by Tagore in 1905 during the Partition of Bengal by the British. The first 10 lines of the song were adopted by Bangladesh as its national anthem in 1971.
On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party had on social media shared a video of Congress leader, identified as Bidhu Bhushan Das, singing a couple of lines of Amar Sonar Bangla at the party's Seva Dal meeting in Sribhumi district earlier this week.
The video posted by the BJP also quoted Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi pointing out that the song by Tagore had given the Bengali people “the courage to rise against the British”.
In response, Assam BJP said on social media that Gogoi was “shamelessly” justifying the singing of the song. “In fact, calling it shameful would be too mild, it's downright pathetic and disgraceful,” the Hindutva party said.
On Wednesday, Sarma alleged that the “district Congress committee of Sribhumi” had sung Bangladesh's national anthem “in place of the national anthem of India”.
“This is a blatant disrespect to the people of India, the national anthem as well as it is in line with the new claim of various leading citizens of Bangladesh that eventually, North East will become its part,” Sarma said.
“We see the recitation of national anthem by the Congress district committee is somehow an endorsement of the claim of various Bangladeshi people and organ of the government that North East is their part and parcel,” the chief minister said.
He added that he has instructed the Assam Police to register a case against the Congress district committee in Sribhumi.
Gogoi told reporters that the song “conveys the sentiments of Bengali culture” and that the BJP “has always insulted the Bengali language, Bengali culture and the people of Bengal”.
“Their IT cell has also insulted people of Bengal in the past,” the Congress leader said. “They have shown ignorance by not knowing the history of Rabindranath Tagore. I think the people of Bengal and Bengali-speaking people in different parts of the country have recognised that the BJP only uses them for votes.”
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra said that the song “is an emotion for all” Bengalis. “Neither saffron chaddis nor their paid troll media will ever get it!” she said on social media.
