Matthew Perry Case: Jasveen Sangha Sentenced, Sparks Conversation On Wellness And Ketamine Addiction
In the latest development in the case surrounding the death of Matthew Perry, Jasveen Sangha, a British-American drug dealer known as the “Ketamine Queen" has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for supplying the ketamine that led to the actor’s fatal overdose in 2023.
Sangha was one of several individuals implicated in the case, alongside intermediaries and medical professionals accused of enabling access to the drug. But as the legal process unfolds, the conversation has moved beyond individual accountability to something more layered and more unsettling.
Because at the centre of this story is not just a question of crime, but of culture: how substances once associated with abuse have quietly rebranded themselves within the language of healing, and how easily that boundary can blur.
The Rise of Clinical Comfort
In recent years, substances like ketamine have moved from the margins into carefully curated spaces, marketed as breakthrough therapies for depression, trauma, and chronic anxiety. What was once stigmatised now arrives with soft lighting, consent forms, and the promise of transformation.
“Patients are often introduced to these treatments at a point of vulnerability," says Dr. Meera Sanyal, a Delhi-based psychiatrist. “The relief can feel immediate, even profound. But without strict boundaries and monitoring, psychological reliance can quietly set in."
This is not addiction in its most recognisable form. There are no dramatic spirals, no visible collapse. Instead, it exists in subtler patterns, appointments that become frequent, doses that feel necessary, a growing discomfort with being without the intervention.
High-Functioning, Quietly Dependent
What the Perry case underscores is a shift in how dependence can present. “This is what we call high-functioning dependency," explains clinical psychologist Rohan Kapoor. “Individuals may appear stable, successful, even self-aware. But internally, there is a reliance on a substance, a routine, a state of escape that becomes difficult to disrupt."
In urban settings, this pattern is increasingly familiar. It doesn’t always involve illegal substances. It can look like sleep aids, anti-anxiety medication, microdosing, or even wellness rituals that promise regulation but slowly become non-negotiable.
The language, crucially, has changed. We no longer say coping mechanism. We say self-care.
The Ethics of Enabling
The sentencing tied to Perry’s case also raises a more complex question of accountability within systems that are designed to heal.
“When does a provider cross from caregiver to enabler?" asks Dr Sanyal. “It’s not always intentional. But when financial incentives, patient demand, and insufficient regulation intersect, the risk increases."
Globally, the rapid expansion of alternative therapies has outpaced regulation. In India, where wellness industries often operate in loosely defined frameworks, the conversation becomes even more urgent.
The Loneliness Beneath It All
Perhaps the most resonant undercurrent in this story is not medical, but emotional.
Perry’s life, successful, visible, widely loved still carried a documented history of isolation. And that contradiction feels increasingly familiar.
“Loneliness today is not about being alone," says Kapoor. “It’s about the inability to sit with oneself without needing interruption, whether that’s digital, chemical, or psychological."
In that sense, the case is less an outlier and more a mirror.
There is a tendency, in moments like these, to search for a single point of failure, a person, a decision, a system. But what the Matthew Perry case reveals is something more diffuse, and therefore more difficult to confront.
We are living in an era where healing is accessible, aestheticised, and constantly within reach. And yet, the question remains, at what point does the pursuit of feeling better begin to cost us the ability to feel at all?
