The BSE Sensex trades nearly 110 points higher at 85,326 points in the morning trade, while the NSE Nifty rises by 40 points to trade at 26,174 points.
The Indian indices started the year 2026 on a positive note with Nifty opening above 26,200. The BSE Sensex traded nearly 110 points higher at 85,326 points in the morning trade, while the NSE Nifty rose by 40 points to trade at 26,174 points.
Among the 30 Sensex shares, 18 were trading in green in the early trade. Among the top gainers were IndiGo, M&M, Eternal, TCS and NTPC rising by up to 1.1%. On the other hand, the top laggards were ITC, Bajaj Finance, BEL, Axis Bank, and Titan.
In the broader market, indices traded with a positive bias. The Nifty 100 was up by 0.18 per cent, the Nifty Midcap 100 surged 0.23 per cent, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.18 per cent in early trade.
Sectoral indices on the National Stock Exchange of India also opened mostly higher. The Nifty Auto index rose 0.24 per cent, Nifty IT gained 0.13 per cent, Nifty Media surged 0.19 per cent, Nifty PSU Bank advanced 0.15 per cent, Nifty Pharma moved up 0.05 per cent, and Nifty Consumer Durable climbed 0.24 per cent.
Globally, nearly all major markets remained shut for the New Year's holiday. US markets closed lower on the final trading day of the year. The S&P 500 slipped on the last day but still ended 2025 with gains of around 16 per cent, supported by continued AI-related optimism. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq Composite also posted double-digit gains for the year.
With limited global participation and steady domestic support, Indian markets are expected to remain range-bound through the session as they welcome the new year.
Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, said, “While continued caution and persistent selling by foreign portfolio investors are expected to cap meaningful upside in domestic equities, the underlying tone remains constructive, with dip-buying likely to dominate as fresh capital gradually makes its way into the market. On the sectoral front, automobile stocks will remain in focus as companies begin reporting December sales numbers, which will be closely monitored for confirmation of sectoral momentum. The data will be key in assessing whether the strong demand traction seen after the recent GST rationalisation is being sustained.”
Technical View
The index has clearly resumed its higher-high, higher-low structure on the daily chart, with the latest bullish candle decisively reclaiming the 20-day EMA near 26,001 and reinforcing the rising trendline support, Ponmudi said.
“Momentum indicators are improving, with RSI recovering toward the 55–60 zone and MACD hinting at a potential bullish crossover as negative momentum fades. This leaves room for further upside. The 26,200–26,300 band remains a key resistance zone, having rejected prices multiple times in recent sessions. A decisive close above this region would confirm renewed strength and open the path toward 26,500–26,700 in the near term,” he added.
On the downside, 26,000–25,900 continues to act as a strong demand zone, and intraday dips toward this region are likely to attract buying interest. Overall, the near-term outlook remains flat to mildly positive amid thin liquidity, maintaining a neutral-to-bullish bias as long as key supports are protected, setting a constructive backdrop for the start of 2026, Ponmudi said.
