Luis Díaz Facing Challenges With Unusual Clause In Bayern Munich Contract
Star Colombia and Bayern Munich winger Luis Diaz has a clause in his contract with the German club, which requires him to learn the language. The 29-year-old has two to three sessions every week and the club evaluates him to map his progress in learning German.
After helping Liverpool win the Premier League in Arne Slot’s first season, Díaz completed a £65.5 million move to Bayern Munich, signing a four‑year contract with the Bundesliga champions.
Díaz has hit the ground running under Vincent Kompany, producing 19 goals and 15 assists across all competitions. But he has faced some challenges off the field with the language.
Díaz’s first language is Spanish and he picked up Portuguese during his time at Porto, along with some English while at Liverpool. But in a recent interview with Sky Deportes, Diaz admitted that the language barrier in Germany remains ‘the hardest thing’ about his adaptation.
A report from BILD, via beIN Sports, states that Díaz’s contract includes a ‘language clause’, making it mandatory for him to attend German lessons as part of his deal with the club.
It is described as a formal obligation written into his contract, one that Díaz must comply with. The agreement requires him to attend two to three German lessons per week and the footballers involved are expected to show measurable progress.
In fact, failing to show sufficient improvement can trigger financial penalties ranging from €5,000 (Rs 5.36 lakh) to as high as €50,000 (Rs 53.64 lakh), depending on the level of compliance displayed.
There are not many Spanish speakers at Bayern, but skipper Joshua Kimmich, who speaks French and English as well, is among the few and struck up a friendship with Díaz.
“We have a few guys who can speak a bit of Spanish. His English is also okay. So we are managing that as a team," Diaz said.
