Bundesliga: Kane Leads Bayern Munich's Rout Of Werder Bremen, Holders Reclaim Six-Point Lead
Bayern Munich romped to a 3-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Saturday, thereby restoring their six-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table as Harry Kane scored twice in the first half.
Borussia Dortmund’s 4-0 win over Mainz on Friday had temporarily closed the gap to three points, but Bayern responded decisively.
Bayern dominated the game from start to finish in Bremen, with Leon Goretzka adding his name to the scoresheet in the 70th minute.
Kane now has 26 goals in 22 Bundesliga matches this season and 41 in all competitions, 13 of which have come from penalties.
Kane’s second goal marked his 500th career goal for club and country. He told reporters, “500 is a great number — a lot of hard work and dedication has gone into it. All I can say is thanks to all of my teammates and managers over the years — and I look forward to the next 50, the next 100."
Bayern played without the suspended Michael Olise for the first time in 89 matches in all competitions since the French winger joined from Crystal Palace in 2024.
Bremen initially held off the league leaders, but Kane put Bayern ahead after 22 minutes by converting a penalty awarded by VAR for a foul on Lennart Karl in the box.
This was the third consecutive match in which Kane had given Bayern the lead from the penalty spot.
Bayern doubled their advantage three minutes later when Kane slipped a low shot in off the right post from the edge of the box.
Bayern captain Manuel Neuer was substituted at half-time due to a recurring calf injury, but sporting director Max Eberl described it as “nothing dramatic" and “a precautionary measure."
Bremen’s Marco Gruell hit the post shortly after the break, but Bayern sealed the victory when Goretzka scored with 20 minutes remaining.
Hoffenheim continued their impressive season by defeating Freiburg 3-0 at home, with goals from Fisnik Asllani, Ozan Kabak, and Valentin Gendrey, strengthening their hold on third place.
Having narrowly avoided the relegation playoff last season, Hoffenheim, a club based in a village of around 3,500 people, are now on track for Champions League football.
In their last 16 league matches, Hoffenheim have only lost twice — to Bayern and Dortmund.
An Ermedin Demirovic brace led Stuttgart to a 3-1 home victory over Cologne in Saturday’s late match, lifting the German Cup holders to fourth place.
Demirovic opened the scoring after 15 minutes, and although Ragnar Ache equalised with 11 minutes remaining, Demirovic restored Stuttgart’s lead just five minutes later with a volley. Germany forward Deniz Undav secured the three points with a stoppage-time goal.
“I’m the striker. I score the goals," Demirovic said.
Stuttgart will travel to Celtic for the first leg of their Europa League knockout tie on Thursday, with centre-back Jeff Chabot saying, “we expect a great game and excellent atmosphere."
Bayer Leverkusen defeated St Pauli 4-0 at home, their fifth win in six games moving the 2024 title winners ahead of RB Leipzig into fifth place.
Former Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah headed Leverkusen into the lead after 13 minutes, and Patrik Schick doubled the advantage just a minute later.
Edmond Tapsoba and Ernest Poku added second-half goals for Leverkusen, who will play Olympiacos in the Champions League knockouts on Wednesday.
Eintracht Frankfurt secured a 3-0 home win over Borussia Moenchengladbach, giving coach Albert Riera his first victory in charge.
Nathaniel Brown, Ayoube Amaimouni, and Ansgar Knauff scored for Frankfurt, who overtook Freiburg for seventh place.
In other matches, Hamburg came from behind to beat Union Berlin 3-2 at home, moving ahead of their opponents into ninth place.
