Lorenzo Musetti Regrets Heated 'Damn Chinese' Remark; Seeks Forgiveness From Fans
Italian tennis star Lorenzo Musetti has issued a public apology after drawing criticism for comments made during his second-round victory at the China Open in Beijing. The 23-year-old admitted he let frustration get the better of him after being disturbed by persistent coughing from spectators.
Outburst During Tense Match
Musetti, the tournament's fourth seed, was visibly irritated during his three-set win over Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on Friday. At one stage, he mockingly imitated someone clearing their throat before saying in Italian: “They cough every three seconds."
Local media, including the state-owned outlet The Paper, went further, reporting that Musetti also appeared to mouth the words “damn Chinese." The allegation quickly gained traction online, sparking anger among fans in China.
Clarification and Public Apology
In response, Musetti took to Instagram on Saturday to clarify his intent and apologise:
“My words were directed only at a few individuals in the crowd who were coughing repeatedly and disturbing the play," he wrote. “They were never, in any way, meant for the Chinese people. It happened in a moment of stress and tension in the second tiebreak, but still, this is no excuse at all. I realise that the way I expressed myself was wrong and inappropriate, and it hurt many Chinese fans' feelings."
The Italian acknowledged that his choice of words had caused offence and stressed his respect for Chinese supporters.
On-Court Challenges Continue
Despite the controversy, Musetti advanced to the last 16, where he will face 37-year-old French veteran Adrian Mannarino. His form remains a talking point: earlier this week, he suffered a setback in Chengdu, losing the final of the Chengdu Open to Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo.
Musetti's remarks come shortly after another controversy involving foreign players in China. American tennis player Taylor Townsend faced backlash for disparaging comments about Chinese cuisine during the Billie Jean King Cup in Shenzhen. She later apologised and withdrew from the China Open, citing scheduling reasons.
