Novak Djokovic Marches On At Australian Open As Injured Lorenzo Musetti Pulls Out
24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic had luck showered on him when Lorenzo Musetti pulled out at the fag end of their quarterfinal encounter at the Australian Open, handing Djokovic an entry into the semifinals, even though the Serb was trailing by two sets to love.
Musetti was in control, leading 6-4, 6-3, 1-3, when he withdrew because of an upper right leg problem that hindered his movement despite treatment.
It was a fortunate turn for the error-prone 10-time Melbourne champion Djokovic, who will next face either defending champion Jannik Sinner or American eighth seed Ben Shelton for a spot in the final.
The reprieve keeps Djokovic's quest for a record 25th major alive. He has been chasing Margaret Court's record ever since his last Grand Slam win at the 2023 US Open.
It has proved tough with the emergence of Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
“I feel really sorry for him, he was the far better player. I was on my way home tonight. It has happened to me a few times. He was in full control. So unfortunate, I don't know what else to say," Djokovic said after the match.
“He (Musetti) should have been the winner today, no doubt. I am extremely lucky to get through this one today," Djokovic added.
With the win against Musetti, the Serb claimed sole ownership of most singles victories at Melbourne Park, going past Roger Federer with his 103rd.
It also put Djokovic into a 54th Slam semi-final to extend his own record. But it looked to all be over for the 38-year-old.
Djokovic was his own worst enemy with a high unforced error rate, racking up 18 in the first set alone and 32 overall before Musetti walked away.
Djokovic held serve, then worked three break points to start. A nervy Musetti saved two of them, but a misjudged forehand put him 2-0 behind.
