Asha Bhosle, legendary playback singer and Padma Vibhushan awardee, has passed away at the age of 92, leaving behind an unmatched legacy in Indian music.
Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who was rushed to Breach Candy Hospital following a cardiac arrest, has died at the age of 92. On April 11, the iconic singer suffered a cardiac arrest following which she was taken to the emergency unit of the hospital, where she passed away. Minister of Cultural Affairs of Maharashtra Ashish Shelar announced the grim news. Her mortal remains will be kept at her residence from 11 am to 3 pm tomorrow, and the last rites will take place at Shivaji Park at 4 pm.
Asha Bhosle was one of the most legendary playback singers of the Indian music industry, and her demise came as a huge loss to the industry. Born on September 8, 1933, Asha began her career at a very young age, and throughout her career, she had given her voice to thousands of songs in multiple languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and Gujarati.
As concern grew online, Zanai Bhosle took to social media to share an official update and request privacy for the family. She posted a picture with Asha Bhosle and wrote, “My grandmother, Asha Bhosle due to extreme exhaustion and suffering a chest infection has been admitted to hospital and we request you to value our privacy. Treatment is ongoing and hopefully everything will be well and we shall update you positively.”
In her career spanning over decades, she received several accolades, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, in recognition of her immense contribution to Indian music.
Asha Bhosle turned 92 last year on September 8, and after turning a year older, she spoke to ETimes and shared, “I am 92 years old and I take this opportunity to thank all my well-wishers who have supported me in my long journey. Had it not been for your love.” She further continued and added, “Every time I hear your applause, it pushes me to go further and test uncharted territories in this vast ocean of music and art. Quite contrary to my public image, I am reclusive at heart. I am shy to discuss my achievements because I have so much more to learn in so little time.”
Asha Bhosle’s list of timeless hits includes classics such as Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Dum Maaro Dum, Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko, Jhumka Gira Re, Yeh Mera Dil, Dil Cheez Kya Hai, O Mere Sona Re, and In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke Mastane Hazaaron Hain.
In her personal life, Asha Bhosle faced many challenges. At the age of 16, she married Ganpatrao Bhosle, who was 15 years her senior and also worked as her sister’s secretary. The marriage, done against her family’s wishes, turned out to be unhappy and short-lived. It’s said that she endured mistreatment from her in-laws during this time. Later in life, Asha Bhosle found both love and creative harmony with legendary composer Rahul Dev Burman (RD Burman), whom she eventually married. Interestingly, RD Burman was six years her junior, and it was his second marriage as well. Together, they formed one of the most iconic and enduring partnerships in Indian film music — a union where love and melody walked hand in hand.
