Celebrity chef Ranveer Brar recently gave his fans a lesson from the lanes of Lucknow. It was all about setting the record straight on black carrot and beetroot. In an Instagram reel that's capturing attention, Ranveer Brar addresses people from “outside Lucknow" to clarify a common culinary mix-up.
Holding a small bowl of black carrot halwa in his hand, Brar points to the deep, bluish-hued dessert and says, “Black carrot is not beetroot. Beetroot is different. Black carrot is different. The beetroot halwa you eat is not the same as black carrot halwa."
He shows a spoonful of the black carrot halwa he is savouring, letting the colour speak for itself.
Soon, the scene gets better when someone from the sweet shop calls out to him. To his delight, they hand him a black carrot and say, “See, take this, it's right here."
Brar beams at the gesture, sharing the moment with his viewers. “See, I'm sharing it here with proof. Even though proof wasn't really needed, here you go. This is a black carrot. It's not beetroot," he says, while showing the black carrot in his hand to his viewers.

The reel quickly went viral, amassing over 362k views at the time of writing. Many users shared their own experiences with black carrot halwa.

Another highlighted its regional significance, writing, “Apart from Lucknow, it's also a heritage dessert of Allahabad. I've tasted it in both Lucknow and Allahabad."
Many echoed Ranveer Brar's distinction between regular carrot halwa and the black variety, with one user stating, “Trust me, regular carrot halwa and black carrot halwa taste completely different."
Some also said it was a challenge explaining the difference to people outside Lucknow. “It's hard to explain what ‘black carrot' is to many Indians living outside Lucknow."
Users shared personal stories too, with one writing, “I once made black carrot halwa, and the taste was absolutely awesome. You'll forget about the regular red carrot halwa! Now that winter has started, every street in Lucknow has something hot and delicious to eat. It's an amazing feeling."
